Random House Children’s Books supports the First Amendment and celebrates the right to read. Laurie Saunders sat in the publications office at Gordon High School chewing on the end of a Bic pen. She was a pretty girl with short light-brown hair and an almost perpetual smile that only disappeared when she was upset or chewing on Bic pens. Lately she’d been chewing on a lot of pens. In fact, there wasn’t a single pen or pencil in her pocketbook that wasn’t worn down on the butt end from nervous gnawing. Still, it beat smoking. Laurie looked around the small office, a room filled with desks, typewriters, and light tables.

Friends Till the End.

Summer of '69 is Strasser's autobiographical novel/memoir about his life during the summer of Woodstock, the war in Vietnam, and the first man to set foot on the moon. His 2014 novel, Fallout, is part memoir and part speculative fiction featuring nuclear war that results from the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

Attendee Todd Strasser recalled the unique sense of comradery and "spirit of sharing and togetherness" that developed at the festival. Perhaps it grew out of the sense of wonder and astonishment that there were so many of us – music lovers, long hairs, counter culturalists, hippies, back-to-the-landers. During the slow moments I read Bill Graham Presents, a really amazing story of the promoter Bill Graham and the San Francisco sound of the 1960s. Absolutely fascinating to anyone who was following the music. If you read just one book this summer, I sure hope it's my Summer of '69. But if you have time for two books, I strongly recommend the Graham book.

With his girlfriend, Robin, away in Canada, eighteen-year-old Lucas Baker's only plans for the summer are to mellow out with his friends, smoke weed, drop a tab or two, and head out in his microbus for a three-day happening called the Woodstock Music and Art Fair. But life veers dramatically off track when he suddenly finds himself in danger of being drafted and sent to fight in Vietnam.

The sensitive young David, coping with the imminent death of a new friend and society's attitude toward the sick young man, realizes the value of friendship
