Five Go Down To The Sea is the twelfth novel in The Famous Five series by Enid Blyton. It was first published in 1953. Siblings Julian, Dick and Anne Kirrin, and their cousin Georgina 'George' Kirrin and her dog, Timmy, spend a holiday at a coastal farm in Cornwall. There, they are hosted by the garrulous Mrs Penruthlan and her enormous husband, whose monosyllabic utterances they find incomprehensible.

I always read a Famous Five adventure whenever I take a holiday. Quite an exciting read. These books capture the holiday atmosphere and incite your mood for exploring seaside rocks and cliffs, old ruins, quaint country towns, or to partake in a sunny countryside picnic. I have read them all many times and I'll continue to read them on holidays yet to come. Five Go Down To The Sea' (1953) is the 12th book in the 'Famous Five' series.

СYou going off to Cornwall, I see?Т said the porter. СAnd to Tremannon, too. You want to be careful of bathing there. WeТll look up your uncle if we can!Т They each took a corner seat, and Timmy went to the opposite door, put his feet up on the ledge and his nose out of the window.

СYou going off to Cornwall, I see?Т said the porter. ThatТs a fierce coast and a hungry se. СOh, do you know it?Т said Anne, surprised. He meant to stand like that all the way! He loved the rush of air past his nose. СTimmy, come down,Т said George. Timmy took no notice.

The Five take yet another parentless holiday, this time to a farmhouse near the sea. They go by train and are delighted to find the station is just a bare platform stranded in fields. The Five (rather like Mrs Blyton I imagine) do not approve of the kind of diversions that teenage children tend to like. They would rather be miles from anywhere enjoying bracing walks. My 8 yr old grandaughter reads like a sponge and I got the Famous Five books to get her started on something new. She adores them and is already asking for more and it is only January. I can always rely on Amazon.com as living in UK it is a great way to get gifts to my daughter in USA. Highly recommended for the avid reader who wants something different to the American norm.

This episode reunites our usual five friends: Julian, Dick, Anne, George, and her faithful dog Timothy of course. This time, the five are off to a small Cornish fishing village for a restful holiday at a local farm and they make a half hearted pact not to fall into one of their usual hair raising adventures. But the quiet days of wandering the farm and the local coastline are soon shattered by strange people prowling around at night. The five toss their pact to the winds and hurry to investigate, of course, And they soon find themselves in the middle of yet another thrilling adventure filled with mysterious flashing lights, a young cornish boy who is impossible to get rid of and traveling Barnies. This installment in the series is particularly memorable for the hilarious horse named Clopper, the inarticulate Mr Penruthlan (the indistinguishable conversation between Mr Penruthlan and his wife had me laughing so hard I nearly fell of my chair) and an unusual twist at the end.
