Essential Defenders, Vol. 6 book. DeMatteis, Mark Gruenwald. This volume covers Defenders issues and a couple of extras from 1982-83

Essential Defenders, Vol. Stephen Grant (Illustrator). Don Perlin (Illustrator). Sal Buscema (Illustrator). Al Milgrom (Illustrator). This volume covers Defenders issues and a couple of extras from 1982-83. We open in the aftermath of a major plotline involving a group of self-proclaimed super-patriots trying to take over America with a group of powerful telepaths. These telepaths and Kyle Nighthawk Richmond combined their mental powers to blow up the bad guys’ base, apparently dying in the process.

DeMatteis and Don Perlin continue their interesting run on "The Defenders" with this fine collection. Following the cataclysmic events of the previous volume, "The Six-Fingered Hand", DeMatteis slows things down and offers several introspective stories that show our heroes spending more time looking into their own hearts and souls than trading blows with this week's supernatural threat. As I read it I was impressed by the way DeMatteis often avoided comic book clichés of the day by offering deep, moving stories focused on the humanity of each character.

Vol 6 is Essentially (if you pardon the pun) the last volume of the Defenders series. It's true that the entire book ran for an impressive #152 issues considering that it wasn't one of Marvel's heavy hitters but it's easy to consider this the final volume. One way the book gives the feeling of a final volume is from wrapping up several ongoing plot threads. The Elf With The Gun (originally just supposed to be a way of showing the acausal nature of life) is addressed, the fate of Nebulon (who menaced the Defenders back in vol 1, 3, and 5.) Hellcat finding out more about her past (from vol 5) Finally having the Defenders fight the Enchantress again (a plot thread all the way back from the vol 1) All these plot points and more were addressed and longtime readers were richly rewarded.

The Defenders did something a lot of successful team stories do. They focused and developed on lesser known characters that weren't able to support their own books. Nighthawk was originally some poor Batman parody back when he appeared in the Avengers but over the course of the Defenders he got his own interesting back-story and became the heart and soul of the team. Sometimes acting as the straight man in absurd situations the group got into. Dr. Strange was always the wise team leader. Valkyrie learned about being human, Damien Hellstrom struggled between good and evil etc.

i've been a defenders fan ever since the beginning. i have their entire collection up until i think it ended with #157. i have it stored away so reading these in black and white is fine for me. what a series. i may try and pick up where i left off if they become available.

This is really the end of the Defenders. The next (and last) volume is a different series, and not a good one.

Wrapping everything up: Damain and Patsy marry, the team mourns Nighthwak and we bid farewell to the original members. Although the comic would go until 152, this is it creatively. The beast turns them into a real tea, instead of the old non-team. No more of Dr. Strange, the Silver Surfer, The Hulk, and The Subamriner. They realize that if they keep battling together as The Defenders the earth will fall(or something to that effect). After issue 124, the Defenders because a really bad version of he Avengers. As much as I love Beats and his two erstwhile ex-x-men(Iceman and Angel) the comic lost it's purpose.

This book collects DEFENDERS (1972) #107-124, NEW DEFENDERS #125, AVENGERS ANNUAL #11 and MARVEL TEAM-UP (1972) #119. Great cover art by Bill Sienkiewicz on some issues.
