McDaniel's books are ultimately optimistic and life-affirming. McDaniel began writing about young adults when her son Sean was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at the age of 3. His illness changed the lives of everyone in her family forever. I saw what life was like for someone who was chronically ill, and I experienced how it affected the dynamics of the family," says McDaniel. She says she found that writing about the trauma and its effects was therapeutic.

TEN The least you can do is come to the mall with me and help me pick out something to stand around in at the dance. Joy’s tone of voice made it sound as if it were all Elly’s fault that Joy didn’t. have a thing to wear to the. have a thing to wear to the dance that Saturday. To avoid an argument, Elly agreed to go to the mall, hobbling along on her crutches. All the while, she wanted to be back home. What do you think of this?. Joy paraded in front of Elly in the dressing room. She was wearing a bright outfit-a green top and white pants. She thought it looked better on the mannequin

Lurlene McDaniel began writing inspirational novels about teenagers facing life-altering situations when her son was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. I want kids to know that while people don't get to choose what life gives to them, they do get to choose how they respond. com User, December 16, 2005. Why Did She Have To Die- Lurlene McDaniel This is probably the most realistic book I've read so far by McDaniel. She is a fantastic author with stories dealing with different sorts of tragedies.

For thirteen years, Elly has been in Kathy's shadow, always second best. Even so, the two of them understand each other as only sisters can. Jealousy, anger, and resentment give way to guilt when Kathy dies suddenly and Elly is left to ask, "Why did she have to die?"

I picked up my first book of lurlene in 8 grade. I hate reading unless it's her books. I went out and bought a nook tablet just to read her books. I'm now a mom of two and a lot older and still only read books from this one author. I'll never forget my teen years of sitting in my room crying at the endings of her books or even just a emotional climax. Specially growing up as "bully" I can honestly say even small things such as a touching heart warming emotional eye opening book, can change a person. If only I could meet my inspiration in real life. She deserves to know how she touched and change means a person.sometimes life is just too short.

I thought this book w as spectacular! It mixes love with jealousy with loss. Even if you didn't lose someone you can still relate. This is a must read!
I first read this book as a sixth grader, when I first discovered Lurlene McDaniel's books at a book fair. That was over twenty years ago but I still remember....

Elly is tired of playing second fiddle to her older sister Kathy. Kathy is everything that Elly is not, a good student, popular, creative, and neat. Elly is especially angry that she has to help with the spring dance, of which her sister is head of the decorating committee. Elly is counting the days until the end of the year when at last, she and Kathy will be attending different schools and Elly will have her time in the sun.

That chance never comes as both girls are in an accident that leaves Elly severely injured and Kathy dead. Kathy's death hits everyone hard, especially Elly and her father. Elly denies the fact that she and her family need help to cope, until Elly's wild behavior at school comes to a peak and at last, she and her family seek out the professional help they so desperately need by attending grief support groups.

This is the story of a family's attempt to deal with the loss of their sister and daughter and how by beginning to deal with their grief instead of ignoring it, finally begin to heal from this awful tragedy.

I have been reading Lurlene McDaniel since the spring of 1988 and she has never disappointed me on her books. They will make you think, laugh, and cry and definitely make you appreciate life a little more.
