Daniel Cohen writes many books about them. There are nine ghost stories in this book. Some are traditional stories. Daniel Cohen writes short sentences. They all sound like this. They get on your nerves. Adults have heard these stories already. Some kids have not. Some of these stories are pointless. Some are about real people like Abraham Lincoln. This book collects a number of interesting unsolved crimes (as of around 1982 ish) and rounds out the four children's encyclopedias by Daniel Cohen. This book has a bit more coherency than the others in this series, and goes into a bit more detail in each article than for the other encyclopedias. In Cloning, author Daniel Cohen attempts to reveal the mysteries in the scientific field of, you guessed it, cloning; including pop culture references as well as historical background on the mysterious field. It is an admirable effort by Mr. Cohen, but the book I hoped would be a concise analysis behind the science of cloning turned out to be a broad and sparse reference at best, choosing to focus mainly on the politics and social response to the controversy; which in any other case may be acceptable, but as I was looking for raw science, I found little to love. The only part of the book where I truly learned anything about the process of cloning was in the chapter "Hello Dolly", which went over the circumstances needed to create the (in)famous Dolly the Sheep, and the only interesting reference that wasn't fictional in nature was the comparison of cloning to the discovery of recombinant DNA in the 1970's; making a connection between the fear of the unknown that was generated with both cloning and genetic engineering. Other than these few sparks of greatness however, the book chooses to whittle away on topics of speculation; investing its already short length (117 large font pages) somewhat explaining the imaginative science that could bring back the dinosaurs, specifically addressing Jurassic Park; in essence reiterating processes that I had already learned from watching the movie itself. Overall it was an interesting read if you are looking for an onlooker's analysis of the history and social impact of cloning, but as an in depth exploration into cloning Cohen falls short, and the book becomes a clear example of an author out of his element and grasping for straws.

This book really helped me learn about cloning, and especially animal cloning. I found losts of reseach from Daniel Cohen's book. If you need a good reseach book or just one to have fun reading, Cloning is a great book. I'll always remember my favorite line out of this book: Animals Are Not Test Tubes With Tales.
