Our regional guide to Sicily. Read an excerpt from this book: ‘Puppets and Mafiosi’. Puppets and Mafiosi – an excerpt from Sicily. The first Crusades of the 11th century gave the Normans a taste not only for conquest but also for chivalry. The first appetite they gratified in southern Italy, Sicily and England, the second in a strict code of honour and in the deeds of King Arthur, Charlemagne and Roland, ‘Orlando’ in Italian.

Another excellent Cadogan guide. I would say 'indispensable'. Sicily is packed with stuff. My interest is historical - Greeks & Co. Cadogan guides often have small wonders & hidden gems - I've seen something and made a detour (sometimes a rather long one) to get to whatever they've described and been well rewarded. This may sound like a strange pairing but their guides to Scotland are similar - they dig up stuff only knowledgeable locals would know about - again, especially 'cultural' stuff. I tend to go with Cadogan & Blue Guides (also outstanding), but one of the advantages of the Cadogan is they also list a few restaurants and hotels (which typically the Blue doesn't).
=> UPDATE!! That applied to an older Blue Guide, I just got the new edition for Sicily and it does have hotel & restaurant reviews and they sound very intriguing (good on ya Blue Guides)
=> So I rate the Cadogan guides as highly recommended, particularly this one for Sicily, even if it is a bit old now.
Note: beware there are a couple of oddball reviews here which do not apply at all - Amazon should take down such reviews, they're unhelpful for readers trying to choose.

Terrific for those who need to play with the brain when they don't have the brawn!
