Been traveling for years and have taken these DK guides with me. Less for the hotels and the restaurants and more for the sense of culture, history, and landmarks. They're outline and graphics of the various monuments and destinations have always been helpful.

Organized district by district, this is an illustrated guidebook to Lisbon where every significant sight, location, building, museum and gallery as well as major shops, hotels and restaurants are shown. They are placed on the page alongside practical information.

DK always seems to be the forerunner with beautiful photo's to help you figure out what you don't want to miss on your trip. A little light in some of the history, so I didn't give 5 stars. A VERY useful guide!!

I have used DkEyeWitness travel books for years. They are the most informative travel books I have used.I would recommend these books for traveling abroad.

The Amazon listing showed this to be a 2008 edition. When I went back to order a second copy, I could no longer find it - only an older version. After a few emails and some diligent and appreciated work on the part of Amazon, it turns out the edition I received is the old edition with simply a 2008 publication date and a new, updated edition will not be available until the first quarter of 2010. Unless you are leaving for Lisbon between now and the end of the year, you might want to wait.

If the edition is updated for 2009, you would think they would take the time to edit out *clearly outdated information* like the forward looking statement about renovations being completed in 2004!!

While the book is handy guide to the what and where of Lisbon, it is really very sterile and a lame guidebook. Get past the nice color pictures and glossy pages, and there's frankly not much substance.

I will not be buying Eyewitness Travel Guides again.

Eyewitness Travel Guides are really great value and this is a very nice guide book. Take an Eyewitness Guide and a Cadogan Guide (if available) and you will have all the information you might possibly need. Forget the competition. This is the kind of intelligent tour guide you have been waiting for.
The introduction is a beautifully illustrated time line of Portuguese history since the 1200s. The city and surrounding area is then broken up into sections and each is introduced by use of picture-driven accounts and easy to read descriptions of what you will encounter. There are nice maps and each area is described in such illuminating detail that you cannot help but get up early and get down to it. Each place of interest is preceded by a list of opening times, map locations and details of how to get there by using public transport.
It's all highly readable and also gives useful tips on where to eat, what to do, where to stay and how to get about. The nice thing about the hotels and eating guides is the way this book breaks down its recommendations by price - allowing travellers of varying budgets to enjoy their time in this fascinating of cities.
This is a very good book indeed.

Just back from a week in Lisbon, we used this guide & found that we could have spent a month or more & still not have come anywhere near exhausting the possibilities shown in the book. The previous reviewer made the point that this guide (1997 edition) is a bit out-of-date; true, but what it does include is excellent & very well presented. The book is a convenient size, has a sturdy cover, & is easy to carry with you as you explore the city. I usually go for Lonely Planet travel books, but chose this one instead because of its excellent illustrations. For your first visit to Lisbon, I don't think that you can go wrong with this book. By all means, go & see this marvelous city, an intriguing mix of old & new, but be sure to wear your most comfortable walking shoes; Lisbon is built on 7 hills, & everything is either up- or downhill. The walkways are paved with stones & are not smooth, but that is part of the charm of the city. We plan to go back again.

Lisbon is one of the most beautiful and unique cities in the world and this is a great guide to this great city: it gives you a lot of information about places to see, things to do, how to use the public transport, accommodation, etc.

Also the book itself is rather beautiful, has lots of pictures, great illustrations and maps. This edition is a must have for anyone exploring the capital of Portugal.

I also strongly recommend the «Lisbon Top 10» from DK and «Eyewitness Travel Guide to Portugal».

I found this travel guide really useful.It gives you a lot of information about places to see, things to go, how to use the public transport, accommodation, etc... Apart from that, this book also gives you a brief historical explanation of the city, its origins and development which I quite liked.
