This foray into the often violent subcultures of Japan dramatically debunks the Western perception of a seemingly controlled and orderly society.

Interesting insight into some of Japan's many interesting (usually hidden to the outside world) subcultures. Each chapter is a separate story focused on a main character who is immersed in the particular subculture. Provides a quick (can't be exhaustive in only one chapter) glimpse into the seedier side of Japan - usually from the perspective of a disaffected youth who does not identify with Japan's sterile, salaryman, borg (group think) mentality. Some of the chapters end abruptly and you wish that particular storyline would continue. A good read to get a basic sense for the other side of big city life in Japan that is not readily apparent to a tourist.

This book has aged well. Still areas of relevancy. A good read with nice variety of stories and interesting people

I had thought the book was supposed to be an analysis of one particular portions of the sub cultures of Japan, the speed tribes; however, the book looks at many different sub cultures that are not 'traditional japanese' culture. Very interesting, and informative, but I would have preferred more investigation in many areas.

This is not an academic work replete with quantifiable research. It is Gonzo journalism at it's best... fun to read and reveals interesting subcultures...

Some good, some not so much, pretty interesting overall

It became obvious that the author loosely bases his tales on very little fact. This isn't to say that there aren't criminals and ne'er-do-wells in Japan (as in the rest of the world) but if you were to pick a crime...say, stealing motorcycles...and then write a story with two main characters, a love interest, a few antagonists, you'd be doing exactly what is done here. In the end, I think it a little sophomoric to think that we should be shocked by what we read, when what we are reading here is obviously fiction based on fact. Whenever conversations between two characters takes place, you know the author wasn't present for those conversations, whenever a crime is discussed, you know the author is guessing as to how it was done.

Great book! Lived in japan for 6.5 years and this book was brilliant!
Karl Taro gave the reader a glimpse of the Japanese youth in a fascinating way. He crafted several stories to highlight the different aspects of Japan’s new youth. This made for an interesting read that opened me up to a fascinating world. There was a lot that I did not know about Japan and what it was like to grow up there. Speed Tribes stands as a unique book that highlights an important topic. It also highlighted how many of the Japanese youth fall through the cracks of a well-balanced society. This is a great book that I really enjoyed.
