Graphic Design Play Book. An Exploration of Visual Thinking. Sophie Cure and Aurélien Farina. Thinking about this plethora of signs was what led us to conceive this introduction to graphic design as a collection of beacons and benchmarks – as a toolbox for exploring and learning in a simple and intuitive way through play, alone or with others, whether you’re a child or an adult. The four sections of this book – typography, posters, signs, identity – are all invitations to dive in, explore and let your eyes and your hands take you on a voyage of discovery! – Sophie Cure and Aurélien Farina.

Exploring Adobe Flash CS4 offers an in-depth, design-driven introduction to Adobe's industry-standard 3D animation and multimedia software program, with its rich features and tool sets, widely used today by designers, developers, animators, educators, and students. At an introductory level, the book explains the primary applications of the program: graphics, animation, interactive authoring, and audio and video integration. Each lesson builds reader understanding of all that Adobe Flash has to offer while providing an opportunity to explore each of these application areas individually as well as in the context of a complete project or interactive experience. By the end of the text, readers can design their own Adobe Flash web sites, movies, and presentations, complete with graphics, animation, text, and interactive events such as buttons and video and audio playback. Interweaving design concepts with valuable advice from professionals in the field, Exploring Adobe Flash CS4 delivers a practical, results-oriented approach to learning Flash.

I am currently taking an Intro to Flash course and the professor is the author of this book. This is a great instruction manual - it walks you through step by step. The examples on the CD are helpful and the lessons are all easy to follow. I give it 4 stars because it lacks explanation as to WHY you do certain steps.

Being a completely new Flash user, I recommend this book as a first step.

I tried out a number of Flash CS4/CS5 tutorial books and this was the worst of them all. The author constantly talks down to you like you're an idiot or a 5 year old. AS2 is used instead of AS3 because the author claims it's just too hard to use. Considering AS3 was one of the advantages of CS4 it's strange that it wouldn't be used or taught. Luckily none of the other Flash CS4/5 books had a problem using it nor thought that it's readers were too stupid to use it. A lot of the time I felt like I was reading a book meant for a 5 year old. Like when the author says things like 'I know there's a lot of scary actionscript in there' upon being told to look at a file with some AS in it. Really? Is the boogieman hiding in there too with all that scary actionscript?

When AS was used in the book, she always said to look for it in the code snippets. That's great to use as a shortcut, but you still need to learn the basics of AS. No matter how dumb you think your readers are, they are capable of typing in play(); or stop(); instead of having to search for it in the code snippets. It really isn't that complicated of a thing to teach or learn. The really sad thing about all this is that it was written by a teacher, who actually teaches a class in Flash. If this book is an example of what she is teaching in her class, I think her students are getting shortchanged.

I did give it two stars though instead of one, since there is some useful information in there, if you can ignore the condescending tone used. Plus you get a feeling of accomplishment when you are able to figure out what she did wrong in her code examples and are able to get it to work on your own.

I highly recommend the Flash CS4 (or CS5) classroom in a book series. It teaches you a lot of useful things, actually uses AS3 and makes it easy for beginners to use, plus the author never talks down to you. Another good one is Flash CS4 (or CS5) the missing manual, my second choice after the classroom in a book series.
