This book goes into a lot of depth in certain areas that will make your head swim at first, I read it twice and even then used Sybex and CBT and Testout. DNS and RRAS are some pretty tough areas unless you do this sort of task almost daily in your job function. I used 2 Server 2003 SP2 machines for my labs plus an XP machine. If you use it live temporarily at home for the labs make sure you unplug your switch if used or unplug them when done in case you forget to undo the tasks you had just done for the lab- otherwise you'll be scratching your head wondering why the rest of your home pc's can't get out. Other users claim the 70-291 test is "the beast" and I concur, if you just read and don't do your labwork you're destined to fail. The test really expects you to know what you're doing and remember answers can appear to be correct but might be off just a hair. Overall a very good study aid, I used 7 months between 70-290 and this one to prepare and made sure I felt comfortable knowing all areas. The payoff is super if you pay the cost studying now!

Well, I'm impressed. For starters, I got a valuable education from this book, not to mention a 980 on the exam. This book is a thorough course and will prepare you as much for the real world as it will the exam, but it requires a practice network of at least 2 computers (I recommend 3), and a lot of time - 250 to 300 hours. This isn't the kind of book that you read in bed or on the couch. The book is approx. 25% reading, 75% hands on lab work.

I give my money to Microsoft reluctantly, especially on products that depend on solid communication skills, but since the book came with a trial version of Server 2003, I plugged my nose and bought it. I expected a litany of typos, endless ambiguity and the "good enough" quality standards that their software has accustomed me to, but that wasn't the case at all. The book was 98% accurate. The practice exam software was an asset, and like I said, it was thorough. It's only shortcoming was in the topic area of "Windows Software Update Service". I should add that I had two years of experience within an Active Directory environment under my belt.

Do your research for an MCSA for life, as it's a competitive field of published books. These are worth it for job reference guide.

This book was effective on update release work, and the next full release (2008).

This is a good book, I'm going to keep it on my bookshelf and I would give it 4.5 stars if I could. If you understand everything in this book you will pass the exam! The book does not cover SUS and ISA server, you will be tested on one of these two topics. The CDRom exams are buggy in 2 ways. The first is that sometimes I couldn't get the Exhibits to display....fustrating. The second is that some of the questions are very vague and you can't understand what they are asking for. The Microsoft test will be more specific. However, I do suggest taking the CDRom exams and then make sure you understand why you got the questions wrong, you will be able to find the Technet references when you review the results of the test. If you are a Windowz/Networking beginner you may have issues with the 70-291 test due to the concepts needed, this comes with experience. The book -will- give you the info you need. I'll be reviewing the 70-293 book in a few minutes.

This book covers all of the test requirements as listed on the website for test preparation (go to the microsoft home page and put "/learning/exams/70-284.asp" after the ".com").

In addition, Mr. Willis and Mr McLean write in an easy to comprehend style that leads itself to following along on your test PC if you wish.

Then, as if ir were frosting on the cake, the CD contains very useful study tools like a 300-question test-prep by MeasureUp, the whole book in PDF format, and a 120-day eval copy of Exchange Server 2003.

I definitely recommend this book as an excellent study guide for both those who want to pass the certification exam and those who just want a more detailed explanation of how to implement and manage Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.

Thanks to the authors for making it easy!!

To some, it may not go far enough. To those, I would merely point out Microsoft's "Prerequisites" for the test. No book can give one two years experience; but this book gives a disciplined reader with a couple of PCs the ability to build their own hands-on experience in a step-by-step manner.

I am really starting to like the new MS Press books... Apparently even MS can learn!!

I used thisbook as the only source to take the 70-291 Exam.

I had read reviews on the exam and people were taking up to the third go to pass it... Needless to say I was nervous taking the exam.

I read this book from cover to cover twice for the two days prior to the exam.
Completed the labs and took not of all the tips in the book.
Combined with a few years of on the job experience I passed first go. I found that the text covered all the information required for the exam (and there is a lot to be covered in this one!)
The chapters on DNS I found very well written and also the RRAS chapters in particular.

I would recommend this to anyone wanting to preapre for 291.

I found this book to be a great resource and a good foundational book. I goes into enough detail to get a good understanding of the principals of Windows 2003 Network Infrastructure. While I am not sure you can pass the MSCSE 70-291 test with just reading this book it is a great foundation to compliment a good purchased sample test.
Bought as used item on Amazon. I use it as training book along with 2003 windows server. Although not new, this book and used windows server software still provides a valuable learning tool. I have a full lab built on used hardware and software. This is a great way to get a hands on experience.
