Congestion control algorithms were implemented for the Internet nearly two .

Congestion control algorithms were implemented for the Internet nearly two decades ago, but mathematical models of congestion control in such a large-scale network are relatively ne.

This is an elementary book for graduate students that uses a rich pallet of mathematical tools: convex optimization and control theory (Lyapunov stability and Nyquist criteria and stochastic processes). The book is very well written and will undoubtedly remain a major reference on the topic for years to come. This well-written book presents an overview of the mathematics behind internet congestion control.

Given a set of trajectories and a class of Lagrangians, we are interested to find a Lagrangian in this class for which these trajectories are optimal. To model this inverse problem we use a relaxed version of man optimality conditions, in the continuity of previous work in this vein.

This book is devoted to new methods of control for complex dynamical systems and deals with nonlinear control systems having several degrees of freedom, subjected to unknown disturbances, and containing uncertain parameters. Various constraints are imposed on control inputs and state variables or their combinations. The book contains an introduction to the theory of optimal control and the theory of stability of motion, and also a description of some known methods based on these theories. Major attention is given to new methods of control developed by the authors over the last 15 years.

Bridges mathematics, engineering, and computer science; considers stochastic and optimization aspects of congestion control in Internet data transfers.

Congestion control algorithms were implemented for the Internet nearly two decades ago, but mathematical models of congestion control in such a large-scale are relatively new. This text presents models for the development of new protocols that can help make Internet data transfers virtually loss- and delay-free.

* Recommended by T.Basar, SC series ed.

* This text addresses a new, active area of research and fills a gap in the literature.

* Bridges mathematics, engineering, and computer science; considers stochastic and optimization aspects of congestion control in Internet data transfers.

* Useful as a supplementary text & reference for grad students with some background in control theory; also suitable for researchers.

This book is a very interesting introduction to the mathematics of internet congestion control. Although the book is clear, it requires that the reader is acquainted with some topics of numerical optimization (with penalty functions), convex analysis (very basic) , the Karush-Kuhn-Tuker theorem and Lyapunov stability. Most of these topics arise in a course of control theory.

Chapter 1 and 2 are introductions to the theme.

Chapter 3 is the most important chapter that introduces the contributions of Kelly et al. (1998) [Rate control for communication networks: shadow prices, proportional fairness and stability - Journal of the Operations Research Society] and Low and Lapsley (1999) [Optimization flow control - I: Basic algorithm and convergence - IEEE Transactions on Networking].

Chapter 4 presents other internet protocols. The other chapters are extensions of the main model.

The kindle version is not worth it. The equations display very poorly. A waste of a purchase. I bought a hard copy elsewhere after this kindle purchase.
The book itself is great.
