This product is amazing for learning a lot of cool stuff in Photoshop. Be sure to get the CD that comes with it though, otherwise you will not get the full advantage of it.

Not-the-Same
There are newer versions of Photoshop out now, so it doesn't cover everything that's available in the new software, but it's still a good resource as far as learning much of the features of Photoshop.

I've been using photoshop for about 8 years. I'm self-taught using a variety of books as well as internet tutorials and YouTube videos. Since my knowledge on many things was on a need-to-know basis, I figured it would be best to get an actual classroom-style textbook and start from the very beginning in order to fill in the blanks of what I've come to know over the years. My friend had the whole "CS4 Revealed" series of books since he'd needed them for college, so he let me borrow them.

First the positive: the author clearly knows her stuff, and overall it's written well.

Now the negatives...

Everything about the book is ridiculously tiny. The font size is way too small and it's a strain on the eyes to do any extensive reading. What's strange is that each page has a plethora of blank, available space, so there's really no reason why the text couldn't have been made bigger. The figures/screen-shots that accompany the text are also extremely small (again with tons of white space around them... why not make them actually readable?). It seems like the layout of the pages was style over function; as if the author wanted to exemplify good design by having the proper amount of negative space and not make the pages look crowded and overwhelming. That's all well and good, but the design of the pages shouldn't be at the cost of readability, or what's the point of doing a book in the first place?

The book has an accompanying DVD which contains files for the user to open and interact with along with each lesson. Again, the images are SUPER tiny! Scaled to 100%, most of the files I've opened so far take up only an inch or two of screen space. In order to comfortably view them and try to do the lesson, I have to scale the images up to 200-300% which makes them all pixelated. I'm sure when they were being created they were much larger, but were scaled down so as not to be *too* big (probably in order to fit them all on the DVD), but how are students supposed to learn when they can barely see what they're working on?

Even though I already know much of what the book is teaching, I look at some of the content and try to read it as if I was just learning. I gotta say, if I were a beginner reading this, I'd be totally lost in some areas... primarily where some pages have highlighted text boxes with tips or non sequiturs. Some of the tips include tools and ideas that haven't even been touched on in the book yet. Why not keep that tip pertinent to the thing that's being taught on that page, or even in that chapter? It's strange and confusing to see subjects completely out of context. A beginner would think, "what is this talking about? Did I miss something?" Some text boxes start talking about things like design and layout, which of course are important in any kind of graphics, but some tips only barely scratch the surface of ideas which would probably take a whole chapter to teach effectively to a total novice, so why waste the space on them? Again, a beginner would wonder how this information pertains to the lesson at hand. Photoshop can be overwhelming to begin with, why make it even more so by throwing in random design rules on the same page as a lesson on how to get accustomed to the program's layout? I could imagine students thinking, "what does that have to do with the lesson? Will this be on the test??"

Even in the first few chapters I have picked up some new knowledge that's been of help to me. Again, it's obvious the author knows her stuff and I give her credit for that. But going through this is a major chore because of some very odd layout and content choices.

As a Mac user very familiar and comfortable with Aperture 2, I decided to try Photoshop CS4 to go the next level of editing and document creation. Twice I walked away from Photoshop finding it unintuitive, confusing, and complicated. But since I had paid so much for the software, I decided to try once again. This time I bought a couple of CS4 How To books thinking that I would be able to learn the program. I tried several books and none had the approach to teaching that would help me learn step by step. Most books I looked at were geared to showing how you can do great things with Photoshop, and how creative one could be. However, they skipped the basics and assumed that you already knew photoshop. Or if they tried to teach basics, their approach was superficial or disjointed. I almost walked away from Photoshop for the last time until I found Adobe Photoshop CS4 Revealed. At first I balked at the price which I thought was outrageous for a paperback. But having paid for the software, I said "what the heck". It turned out to be a very smart decision. The book approaches Photoshop CS4 very methodically and logically. Explains things in detail with great illustrations and in the first few lessons assumes that you have never used Photoshop and gives you the foundation to move on to the creative and advanced features of Photoshop. So, if you are a beginner in Photoshop who understands all that the program can do and want to learn the fundamentals and then move on to the advanced and unique features, then you won't be sorry that you bought this book.
This book provides lots of examples to clarify points and plenty of practice to make sure you understand the tools. For a "newbie" to PhotoShop, I highly recommend it.
