Paul Browning left the police force in June 2000 to begin a career in IT. He quickly progressed from the helpdesk at a large blue chip company to work at Cisco TAC giving WAN support to small to enterprise level customers. In 2002 he started his own network consulting company and then branched into training. Paul W Browning & Farai Tafa have put together a great lab manual. I've configured several of the labs these last two weekends and everything is coming together for me thanks to this book. The audience for this book is people who've gone thru one of the foundation texts and is done studying fundamental concepts.

I bought this book to compliment my Cisco Networking academy training. I am a person that learns more with hands on than through theory and literature. In my opinion the Networking academy lacks the hands on practice to get the full grasp of the theory and literature provided. This book provides all the practice that I could ever want to get me to the CCENT and to the CCNA. There is a certain level of assumed knowledge to get through the labs but that is why I think this book is the best complimentary to my Cisco training. I recommend this book to everyone that is going through the Cisco Networking academy to get extra hands on to get the concepts and to grasp everything you have learned.

Just finished going through the labs in this book and it is really well written! The labs build on each other and the level of complexity is perfect for going through these exercises. The only two areas that were frustrating are:

1. There does not seem to be a location on howtonetwork.net that highlights book errors. There were a couple of labs that I had to modify to get working and it would have been nice to know if these were printing errors.
2. In several of the labs the answers point to other areas of the book that don't have the answers. For example, Challenge Lab 7 requires you to create 12 extended ACL Statements. The answer key points you all over the book and now all examples are covered. In this case it would have been very helpful to have the expected ACL List values in the answer key so that you know that you got it right.
3. SSH wasn't covered :(
4. The price is very very high; especially since all the labs are on the website anyway (no answers though).

I would recommend this to anyone looking for a lab book to iterate through in preparation for the CCNA.

Good practice for the CCNA exam. I'm sure some pros out there won't find this very helpful, but for people new to the field, or doing self study, it's great. Book suggest your own equipment, but so far, I haven't had any issues useing Cisco's Packet Tracer app. My only gripe, aside from the price, is the solutions for each lab are at the back of the book when they could have been at the end of each lab section. It's kind of a pain flipping all the way to the back of the book if you get hung on a specific command. That is not a major issue and would by no means deter me from suggesting this book. Nice thing about the labs is they build upon each previous lab for a section. For example, lab 2 includes some steps from lab 1, and so forth, so you don't have to go back to lab 1 to refresh. Nice job, glad I bought this! Now, if the price were a bit lower...it would have received 5 stars.

While studying for your CCNA, there comes a time where you need to get some hands on with equipment. Some prefer live equipment, others simulators or rack rental time. Whatever path you choose, you'll definitely want to invest in this book!

I took the self-study route and have invested in a few routers and a couple switches but wanted a solid lab book that would help me prepare for my exam. There are plenty of free materials online but I wanted a hard copy that I could take with me and accidentally stumbled upon this book. [...] While shipping took a little longer than expected, I was pleasantly surprised when it finally arrived.

The labs are completed on modest equipment and, at the most, with 3 to 4 routers and a couple switches. The labs start off with the basics: vlans, STP, etc. then naturally progress to more advanced topics. There are a couple labs which, while not directly related to the exam, shed light on areas of IOS that I never knew existed. Learning how to create macros and alias commands are a couple tidbits that I was excited to learn about. Also, the book helped expand my knowledge of IOS and the use of subinterfaces and loopback interfaces to mimic extra subnets. The authors use of different routing protocols on multiple subinterfaces gave me another perspective on how much can be accomplished with just a couple routers and a single cable!

I've made my way through the first 60 labs and will continue them until I've completed them all. I know that I will be well prepared come test day thanks to the guidance of this book. I would like to point out that there are a few grammatical errors and instances where the diagrams used in a given lab are not 100% correct. If you've come this far along in your studies, you should be able to spot them and make the necessary changes on the fly. Even with a few minor blemishes, this book shines bright. If you're in the market for a lab book that will test your knowledge, please give this book a try.

This book will take you over every lab required. Awesome, but it doesn't like simulators and if you don't have a rack or want to buy there servcie....seek another book.
Nikojas
I've gone through 15 of the labs and have encountered multiple errors and unclear instructions already. I had to look up the answer to figure out what the instructions should have been.

To anyone who is considering resources to prepare for the Cisco CCNA exam: BUY THIS BOOK!

I have worked my way through the 101 Labs and have found them to be very, very helpful in my preparation for the CCNA Exam. The labs are in logical succession and the diagrams are easy to follow.

I would definitely recommend this resource!
