Thus begins this colorful history of football at Mercer University, 1892-1942. Mercer had only 179 registered students in 1892 when the first Mercer eleven met the first Georgia eleven on the gridiron in Athens in January 1892, the FIRST college football game in the state of Georgia, and one of the first in the Southeast. College football in 1892 was a far cry from the organized splendor it is today. Uniforms were makeshift, with little or no padding.

While this is a detailed book about Mercer college football, it is actually much more than that. It may not be a history of college football, but it gives an insight that a broader history probably would not. I enjoyed the book and learned much, but I did not read every word.

For Mercer alumni, Coach Wilder's chronicle is necessary reading. While this is a detailed book about Mercer college football. It is actually much more than that.
