On the other hand, while I don’t have the wiggle room on my end, I feel that it largely makes little difference economically to most consumers to pay 4 more dollars if the book really is appealing.

Art Bernstein's tales of the strange-but-true events that occur on a hiking trail--or just while trying to find one--cover ground from Juneau, Alaska to the Florida Everglades. These 13 (well, 14--but two happened on the same hike) tales of unexplained phenomena, mythical beasts, and just-plain Weird Hikes are sure to entertain avid hikers and the people who love them.Entertaining, thought-provoking, and funny, this collection of essays is the result of a lifetime of hiking and an inspiration for readers to get out and experience their own Weird Hikes.

Just got through reading Art Bernstein's Weird Hikes...I started doing day hikes a couple of years ago, and thought this might me a good book to read...I paid .63 cents for the book used, plus $3.99 S&H...$4.62 total...The first two stories I read made me feel like I'd bought a loser...

Honestly I don't know what I expected a "weird hike" to be once I stopped and pondered it for a while...Art's concept of a weird hike can be anything from taking a wrong path on the trail, to dreaming at night in a tent on one of his few overnight trips he does in the book...

Also his imagination running wild is a "weird hike"...I won't go into all what Art Bernstein considers a "weird hike", but you can use your imagination yourself like I did after I'd read two or three hikes in his book, come up with "I'll bet this happens to him on a hike", and sure enough somewhere in the book, something like I'd thought did happen...I did this more than once..."weird huh"...lol

I really couldn't wait to get through this book so I could review it and tell everyone how bad it was...I started not to even finish it...but I did, and something weird happened to me the more I read...I honestly began to like the book...well kinda...

If you can put the idea in your head that the hikes are nothing out of the ordinary, and are mostly just interesting stories, then you will find the book somewhat entertaining..."somewhat"...There is a couple of stories that in my book (if I had a book) that are hard to swallow...I'll say this...Maybe some people can wake-up in the morning and NOT know for certain if it was a dream they had had or if they had REALLY been fighting bears and cows all night, but me for one would know ONE way or the OTHER...but maybe I'm "weird"....

Last but not least...Art Bernstein seems like a likeable enough character...He seems like a guy that would be great to go on a hike with...He has a good wit to him and made me laugh a few times the way he describes things about his life in general...By the end of the book I was just enjoying it for what it was...A book about hiking, which I totally enjoy doing...I like Art usually hike by myself and can relate to a lot of what he had to say... I even thought I'd probably had a couple of "weird hikes" while I've been out hiking if I looked at them in a little different light...Anyone that hikes much can probably do the same...the trail can be strange at times...

That being said if you love hiking, and like me hike by yourself most of the time, you'll probably enjoy Art's book "weird hikes"...Just don't expect him to really see bigfoot, aliens,be abducted by UFO's,ghost or anything like that...It's mostly all in Art's head...Art is a writer, and at the end of the day no one can honestly say he doesn't have a gift of weaving a good story...I gave his book 3 stars because of the price I paid for a used book and because he does have a way of growing on you with the way he tells his hiking stories...WEIRD huh?

Exactly what I expected!

This book is not about hiking. It's more about spirts and paranormal. Very dissappointed, the title and front cover are misleading.

Still reading the book but it is entertaining so far.

Some of the written stories were very interesting. Some of the stories took to long for the author to get to the final outcome. What really got me to the point where it was hard to finish the book was my perception of the author's personal character. Throughout the book he criticized his family. He made negative comments about his wife, his mother who had passed, and one of his daughters. Art Bernstein's lack of loyalty to his family through the critical comments he would write made this a tough read. Art Bernstein is consistent though, he is critical of everyone and finds few words of praise for others. Art Bernstein's constant criticism of others seems to be in his view a way for him to show humor at the expense of his family and those who hike with him.

Bernstein has a way of capturing your heart and soul into his thirty years of hiking experiences and escapades. Not only is this book brilliantly researched and richly packed with knowledge, his warmth and wit and spiritual insight make it a joy and entertaining book to read. Very funny and intensely clever...... and real.... and much more than a book on hiking.

This book looked interesting according to the cover and back cover, but if you're into listening someone rave about their college drinking and other personal anecdotes "not related to hiking!!!!" then I would highly advise not getting this book. I'm sorry I spent the money on it. Next time I'll read more reviews before making a book purchase. It should have been under a different title in the fiction section.
I loved this book. As an avid hiker I'm always looking for good tent reading. Weird Hikes hits the mark. Each tale leads you to the next and makes you want to recount all of your own weird hikes. The stories are witty and engaging and they're even better when the pages are illuminated by a campfire or lantern.
