Ross clearly explains how marine science can help saltwater anglers catch more and bigger fish. The book's first and second parts describe, respectively, oceans and fish. In the final section, Ross, an oceanographer at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, takes the scientific concepts from the first two parts and applies them to fishing for a variety of species along the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf Coasts. Throughout, information is provided on new technology and boating and fishing safety.

Here at last, in layman's terms, is a fisherman's guide to the habitat and behavior of saltwater fish. The first 100 pages are pretty dry. Mostly about water, salinity and the weather. History stuff too. Section 2 gets into fish and their behavior which is better. I feel like I'm learning a lot, and becoming a more knowledgeable angler, but what I've learned hasn’t produced more or bigger fish yet. I haven't finished the book. I keep meaning to, but every time I pick it up I can only manage a couple pages at a time. Not a page turner by any means.
I'm at a frustrating point in my stage of angling wisdom. I've been fishing recreationally for over 20 years. Although I’ve never caught a trophy fish in any species, I’ve got enough fish to enjoy the sport and want to go back all the time. This summer I’ve been applying the knowledge I’ve attained from this book, and a few videos, and I’m catching less and smaller fish. Perhaps the secret to success is in the end of the book.

This is very good information for the serious fisherman. If you only fish once in a great while because someone asked you to go, this may not be for you. The author gets into the ocean structure and biology of the ocean along with tides, waves, currents, and a lot of other information in the first half of this book.

The second half is full of information about fish and he ties it all in with the first half. Very good reading for those who are really into saltwater fishing whether it be from the surf, in a tidal creek, or a boat.
Exellent
This book gives very basic information about catching saltwater fish. More than that- it outlines all of the factors involved in fishing period so that the reader gains more of an understanding of what is taking place around you in the marine environment. From wave patterns to different types of fish, to the color specturm at the depths of the ocean- It's kind of dry but interesting and informative for a novice fisherwoman like myself. It's great bedtime reading because it puts me right to sleep and I can pick right up where I left off with no problem.

Invaluable info for every fisherman.

There is nothing new or incremental in this book to help an experienced fisherman. Ross summarizes many topics that are already well known or in many cases not even relevant.
This book provides an excellent resource on the fundamental knowledge regarding fish behavior and the environment. A very thoughtful outline to promote your fishing arsenal.
