The Flagstone Bench Formation ranges in age from earliest Triassic to Norian (Late Triassic) and is exposed in the Beaver Lake area of the northern Prince Charles Mountains. This sandstone-dominated formation rests conformably on the Bainmedart Coal Measures and represents the upper part of the Permian–Triassic Amery Group. The sediments of the Bardin Bluffs Formation indicate a local source within the Amery Oasis, where Proterozoic granitoid rocks and gneisses, and Permo–Triassic fluvial rocks of the Amery Group are exposed.

This Triassic formation was deposited in a semi-arid continental basin. Sediments reached the P and Q quadrants in braided stream complexes from a hinterland to the southeast. The braided stream complexes were flanked by aeolian, interdune, flood-plain and crevasse-splay environments and terminated in playa lakes. This paper reports a palynological investigation of Lower Triassic rock salt samples from the eastern part of the Netherlands. Bisaccate pollen grains average 99% in the spore-pollen complexes. Most important constituent is the group of non-striate pollen grains (about 91%), whereas striate pollen grains occur only in a small number (about 8%).
