Jane Tozer (Author), Sarah Levitt (Author). This book contains wonderful CLOSE-UPS of fabrics and outfits that were actually worn by people during the periods of 1770 to 1870's. The fact that the photos are in FULL COLOR and also magnified with such detail, will be very helpful to those readers looking for a book about fashions worn during the stated periods. Most of the photos are of costumes and outfits worn by the middle class and upper class, but as stated by the authors, the reason for this is because most of the costumes worn by the lower classes have simply not survived for all these years.

1860s fashion in European and European-influenced clothing is characterized by extremely full-skirted women's fashions relying on crinolines and hoops and the emergence of "alternative fashions" under the influence of the Artistic Dress movement. In men's fashion, the three-piece ditto suit of sack coat, waistcoat, and trousers in the same fabric emerged as a novelty.
