Jane Tozer (Author), Sarah Levitt (Author). This book contains wonderful CLOSE-UPS of fabrics and outfits that were actually worn by people during the periods of 1770 to 1870's. The fact that the photos are in FULL COLOR and also magnified with such detail, will be very helpful to those readers looking for a book about fashions worn during the stated periods. Most of the photos are of costumes and outfits worn by the middle class and upper class, but as stated by the authors, the reason for this is because most of the costumes worn by the lower classes have simply not survived for all these years.

1860s fashion in European and European-influenced clothing is characterized by extremely full-skirted women's fashions relying on crinolines and hoops and the emergence of "alternative fashions" under the influence of the Artistic Dress movement. In men's fashion, the three-piece ditto suit of sack coat, waistcoat, and trousers in the same fabric emerged as a novelty.

This book is unique and often hard to find. I was lucky enough to find this book on AMAZON for a reasonable price & I'm so glad that I did.

This is a hardcover book, in full color, and it has a copyright of 1983 (it is a Laura Ashley publication).
I feel that even though this book was written in 1983, it has stood the test of time and is still very informative today.

If you are looking for a Fashion book with wonderful close-ups and details of clothing worn by the middle to upper classes from the 1770's to the 1870's, then this book may be of interest.

Personally, I love this book. I refer to this book often.

This book contained photos of everyday folks, and the working class, and their clothing. Books with gorgeous ball gowns and court wear are fabulous to look at but what about people like the rest of us? It went into detail of how women sewed, and what their day to day life of dress was like. Lots of men's clothing was included too.
Since I like to make historical clothing for myself to wear, and it's rarely for a ball or court appearance, this was very educational for me.

I am only interested in clothing from the 18th century and was disappointed at how little there was in the book. Also, need more on clothing of lower classes. Not much in book.
