Barry Buzan Ole Wver Jaap de Wilde CHAPTER 1 Introduction The purpose of this book is to set out a comprehensive new framework for security studies. Our approach is based on the work of those who for well over a decade have sought to question the primacy of the military element and the state in the conceptualization of security. This questioning has come from diverse sources rarely coordinated with each other.

by Ole Wæver, Jaap De Wilde, Barry Buzan. Two schools of thought now exist in security studies: traditionalists want to restrict the subject to politico-military issues; while wideners want to extend it to the economic, societal and environmental sectors. This book sets out a comprehensive statement of the new security studies, establishing the case for the broader agenda.

Barry Buzan, Ole Wæver, and Jaap de Wilde. ISBN: 978-1-55587-603-6. The authors argue that security is a particular type of politics applicable to a wide range of issues. Answering the traditionalist charge that this model makes the subject incoherent, they offer a constructivist operational method for distinguishing the process of securitization from that of politicization.

Sets out a comprehensive framework of analysis for security studies, examining the distinctive character and dynamics of security in five sectors: military, political, economic, environmental, and societal. It rejects traditionalists' case for restricting security in one sector, arguing that security is a particular type of politics applicable to a wide range of issues, and offers a constructivist operational method for distinguishing the process of securitization from that of politicization. What Buzan Wæver, and de Wilde have done here is excellent work. Explicitly incorporating constructivism into the analysis of security, their new framework has the power and flexibility necessary to deal with an complex post Cold War security environment. Their most notible contribution here, the idea of securitization, is a powerful but underutilized analytical tool. Well written, the book is of value to students (graduate and undergraduate) and established academics alike.

Brilliant! The securitization framework that they lay out here is revolutionary. They have achieved that rarest of all things: making a 'constructivist' approach useful and accessible to practitioners and laymen alike. ALso, pay no attention to Balzacq...he didn't read past p. 25
