This anthology of reflections and observations features a firsthand view into the mind of the freewheeling leader of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA, in the midst of developing his thought and re-envisioning the communist project. Featuring excerpts from a range of formal talks and informal discussions, this collection examines his cutting-edge vision and theory on topics at the center of current philosophical debate—how humans acquire truth, whether truth exists, the role of art and imagination in being human, and a Marxist view of the Enlightenment. Up against what he perceives to be Dark Ages–thought from the seats of power and "Bush-ism" in the Communist Movement, he brings forth an epistemology of intoxication with truth, a scientific world view, and an inviting vision of a Communist society.

Did you ever wonder what a vision of a Communist society would look like? Then check out Bob Avakian's new book, "Observations on Art and Culture,Science and Philosophy". In this book, a vision on an exciting, vibrant and colorful new society where there is no oppression of people on the basis of their nationality, gender, color or sexuality exist. Where the masses of people are really the makers of history and play an active role in changing the world. Where people not only work and take care of their families, but also engage in art and culture and science and philosophy and debate and challenge each other and have fun doing it. This is a vision of society totally different from the superstitious and deadening hell that we currently live in. Think back to Hurricane Katrina and envision if the people ran this society, the outcome would have been totally different.

Avakian's works - and this is no exception - are uncommonly silly.

He tries very hard to straddle two irreconcilable visions: Dictatorship of the Proletariat and individual liberty. The proof that it can't be done lies in his very wordy, very circuitous diatribes that all reduce themselves to this: "We have to rule with an iron hand, but allow people to think for themselves...so long as they think the right way."

We can rest easily that the likes of Avakian and his band of terminal underachievers won't be ruling anything in either the near or distant future. Nevertheless, you can learn something about the twisted thinking of the left by reading this book, I suppose.

For example, it is instructive that Avakian's scribblings are notable more for what they don't say than what they do. What HAPPENS to the opposers, one might wonder? Surely even a properly class-conscious proletariat won't all accept Avakianism - or even socialism for that matter. Avakian's answer? Well, when they're taught to think PROPERLY, they simply WON'T oppose!

The "logical" extension of course, being that those who oppose AND won't be "reeducated" will have to be dealt with. How? Well, you don't need much imagination for that, though he doesn't answer that question directly (of course). Instead he obscure the matter with mountains of tedious illogical Marxoid psuedointellectual blather - but it still all boils down to "get with the program or get destroyed."

At least religious cultists - like Jehovah's Witnesses - only shun apostates. If the Avakians of the world ever ran things, shunning would become the sort of slaughter we've seen from every doctrinaire collectivist from his beloved Mao to Hitler to Stalin. Same church...different pew.

In the end, it's a philosophy that really appeals only to the terminally alienated, envious and resentful. It provides such folks solace: their lot in life isn't their own fault! It's THE SYSTEM.

This book should carry a warning label: "For Losers Only."
