Jules Archer served four years during World War II in the Pacific with the Army Air Corps. I found this book to be as much, if not more, of a biography of Smedley Butle,r as a book about a plot to seize the White House. After his exposure of the would be plot, so strong grew his hostility to the US being involved in any future war overseas, that he came to oppose FDR's attempts to temper US isolationism in light of the growing threat of fascism in Europe in the late 1930s. By the end, his ultra pacifism comes across as rather naive and simplistic, given the existential threat that Nazism posed to liberal democracy.

The Plot to Seize the White House : The Shocking True Story of the Conspiracy to Overthrow FDR. by Jules Archer.

Most peoplewill be shocked to learnthat in 1933 a cabal of wealthy industrialists—in league with groups like the K.K.K. and the American Liberty League—planned to overthrow the U.S. government in a fascist coup. Their plan was to turn discontented veterans into American “brown shirts,” deposeF.D.R., and stop the New Deal. They clandestinely asked Medal of Honor recipient and Marine Major General Smedley Darlington Butler to become the first American Caesar. He, though, was a true patriot and revealed the plot to journalists and to Congress. In a time when a sitting President has invoked national security to circumvent constitutional checks and balances, this episode puts the spotlight on attacks upon our democracy and the individual courage needed to repel them.

If you want to learn more about this great American and every person interested in the real history of America should be, then this is worth a read. As far as the plot, I'm pretty sure there was one but I think the elite realized that with a little patience, it was easier to just buy it than to take it over which I believe they have done.

It surprised me that I knew nothing about this event in our history. After all, Roosevelt was president when my parents were young. Surely they would have mentioned it. That is unless they never heard about it either. The overthrow of our government, and conversion to a fascist state should have been headline news, but somehow it wasn't.

I read this book because I wanted to know the story. You can read the book; you can read about General Butler on Wikipedia; or you can find a copy of the movie "Seven Days in May" which was based on this book and the intended putsch. But I think it's important you know the story of one of the greatest Marines that ever lived.

A Plot not taught in history classes. But it happened, it's real, it's true. And to help ensure this can't happen again, surely needs to be read. One hundred and fifty years after its founding, we came ever so close the losing our Republic without a shot being fired.

Interesting that speculation suggests the movie, "Seven Days In May", is likely based on the true events told here. So that's what I'm going to do now- watch it on my Kindle!

Read this book; you won't want to put it down.

Throughout U.S. history the power elite have been trying to take control of the country, and at present they may have succeeded. Archer has taken a snapshot of this struggle during the run up to WW-II when Wall Street bankers and industrialists tried to get America's most decorated hero involved in a plot to take control of the government. The problem for the power elite is that every once in a while a U.S. President gets into office who feels obligated to run the government for the American people. FDR was certainly one of these and John F. Kennedy was another.
This book documents how the power structure in the U.S. tried to remove a sitting president and install a dictatorship. Archer named names and explained who and what they were. Although they failed to install a Fascist dictatorship in America, largely due to the courage and patriotism of marine general Smedley Butler, they did not stop. The rise of Fascism in the U.S. during and after WW-II is another story, but it begins with this one. It is an outstanding book and a valuable resource for anyone interested in the under-reported history of America.

This book was quite an eye opener! I guess I've lived 75 years with my head in the sand because I never realized how easy the plot to take over our democratic government could be. Since this event occurred years ago before the availability of instant communication, it would have been even easier. When I bought the book, I though it would be an historical fiction. As I began to read, I realized how wrong I was. As fiction, the book would have been slow and boring. As historical fact, I became intrigued and could have stayed awake all night to finish it. If you are interested in fact, the book is for you. If you want fiction, try somewhere else.

The Plot to Seize The White House covers the background of a true story that was totally new to me and one I think all Americans should read if they are interested in our past history and the reasons behind our nation being involved in wars on foreign soil. I only gave the book four stars because it seemed repetitious at times and was a bit hard for me to follow. (This may be due to the fact that I read mostly fiction where the story tends to move rapidly.) Given the current atmosphere in our nation today, I hope reading this book and others like it will encourage people to think and not take politicians and news media at face value without looking further. Look for the reason behind their support. Is the reason to inform the American people or to promote the agenda of supporters with big money? The quote, "Those who forget the past are bound to repeat it" seems apropos here. On the other hand, if we don't know what happened in the past, we will surely make the same mistakes over and over.

A fascinating historical account about one of our nations finest military commanders that we were never taught about in school. Gen. Butler figured out 85 years ago that war is a racket to produce profit for corporations. A devout Quaker, he vowed not to let another American soldier be sent to defend corporate interests abroad. He stopped a secret coup attempt on FDR and prevented our government from being taken over by facist plotters--another historical event not being taught in our schools. A must read for history buffs and anyone truly interested in protecting our democracy.
