How to Develop the Critical Attitude for Success. About The Winner’s Edge

How to Develop the Critical Attitude for Success. About The Winner’s Edge. The object of this book is to provide the reader with the most critical and important elements that develop and sustain an attitude toward life that results in success for the individual. It is not about gurus, cosmic energy, ESP, or some pseudointellectual or cult movement.

Denis Waitley always has good solid wisdom in his books and this one is no exception. The Winner's Edge does a terrific job explaining the improtance of a health self-esteem and good attitude. Lots of good information on setting and achieving goals. He also describes his child hood and the influence his father had on his success. While having these traits will certainly give you an advantage over others who do not possess these traits, the book is a little too focused on how these traits can pay off towards external results.

Denis Waitley wants you to understand and internalize how to develop that critical attitude for success - that little difference that makes all the difference in the world - known as the winner's edge.

"Why did I chose this rating." Answer. I will reread this book and make more notes. It is clearly written. It dwells more than most other works on the importance is finding, enjoying, and celebrating each day and each moment and each step along the path, even those hard and unhappy moments.
The work also has core techniques for determining and setting out, in writing, longer term goals. That is part of knowing those rocky seemingly unhappy episodes are not a waste of time and energy. (My restatement--the author says the same thing, but in different words.
This is a good, well written work. It may appear to rehash the core of many other good well written works. That is not a bad thing. It means, most likely, that it is full of tested doable and succesdfull action items, as well as restating in a clear manner the same core principles that so many other authors have uncovered.

The Winner's Edge does a terrific job explaining the improtance of a health self-esteem and good attitude. While having these traits will certainly give you an advantage over others who do not possess these traits, the book is a little too focused on how these traits can pay off towards external results. I do wish Mr. Waitley would have explained that it is good to have these traits just for the sake of having them. Much of the external results we experience are due to factors out of our control. The best we can do is maximize our potential, work as hard as possible, and not get hung up on the results of such work--which are largely out of our control. Living a life judged by external factors such as accomplishments is the major culprit for being in-debt, divorced, unhappy, and down right depressed.

Dr. Waitley's 1980 book still has relevance although some of his examples and speculations about the future hurt his credibility. Time has a way of sifting the valuable from the phoney. Like most material of this kind, discernment is needed to identify and retain the desirable, while chuckling at the specious.

In addition to this content issue, another weakness is the excessive emphasis on "self" in the book. God's involvement is blurred and various religious perspectives are thrown together in a nonsensical mix that distorts accuracy.

Having pointed out some flaws, let's look at some strengths. He makes a solid case for having a healthy self-concept. He writes, "the person with adequate self-esteem doesn't feel hostile toward others, isn't out to prove anything, can see the facts more clearly, and isn't demanding in his claims on other people" (p. 74).

Another helpful tidbit is found on page 85 when he notes, "individuals behave, not in accordance with reality, but with their perception of reality." Taken in context, Dr. Waitley has some valid points to make. Read it with discernment and you'll find the bright spots.
Has some good one-liners. This book is dated. Its a 1980 self-help book. Has some originality and is of the 1980's thinking positive mind-set. I read many self help books. They are interesting while reading, positive in action, but, forgotten shortly after the read. I read this book back in Feb.91, its now Dec 2013, this book did have some memorable one-liners or positive statements.
