He was instrumental in the establishment of the Haverford Emergency Unit (a precursor to the American Friends Service Committee). One of the most influential Quakers of the 20th century, he was a Quaker historian and theologian as well as a philosopher. He is the only person to have delivered two Swarthmore Lectures.

The Inner Life reflects upon the Christian principle of the soul and nourishing one's spiritual essence. Rufus Jones (1863-1948), whose life is a soaring example of authentic Christian response, penned this stunner in 1916. I won't be surprised if it is a best seller in 2016. It throbs with urgency and relevance.

Rufus Jones (1863-1948) said in his introduciton, "There is no inner life that is not also an outer life. To withdraw from the stress and strain of practical action and from the complication of problems into the quiet cell of the inner life in order to build its domain undisturbed is the sure way to lose the inner life. The finest of all the mystical writers of the fourteenth century the author of Theologia Germanica knew this as fully as we of this psychologically trained generation know it. He intensely desired a rich inner life, but he saw that to be beautiful within he must live a radiant and effective life in the world of men and events." He goes on to say, "Religion does not consist of inward thrills and private enjoyment of God it does not terminate in beatific vision. It is rather the joyous business of carrying the Life of God into the lives of men of being to the eternal God what a man's hand is to a man. There is no one exclusive way either to the supreme realities or to the loftiest experiences of life."

Right off I read Frederick Douglas thoughts on Lincoln, and I knew this to be a wonderful book, and, I am glad that I have it in my library. I bought the old 1883, edition rather than the paperback, and I think they are still out there for sale, but the paperback is a replica.

Great classic book. I recommend what Rufus Jones writes about the inner life and Quaker thought.

It amazing read at the right time. When you are ready for it read it. The work is intense and smooth and made me smile while I read it.

the print is very large. A smaller version for the pocket would be nice.

It throbs with urgency and relevance. You don't read this book- it reads you. It uplifts and transforms. A SO refreshing testament to life lived in and through the mystery and power of the risen Christ, 24/7. Yup, even for us 'sophisticated' moderns... In my view, this is the original 'big tent' Christianity at its best.
