This book is very different from most other books. Rather than explaining the grieving process and approaching it from the head, it is an invitation to opening up the heart and letting our sorrow and unmourned material come to the surface and speak to us. In Western societies, the expression of grief or sadness is often swept under the rug. This book treats it more like a messenger from the soul and invites the reader to let the sorrow drive you inward. As such, it is written in more of a poetical and lyrical manner. The analogies and insights are powerful and the book is filled with pearls of wisdom.

If you are looking to understand the grief process from the inside and to gain a fresh perspective on grief, this book will be very helpful. I am a personal growth coach and I recommend this to certain clients, particularly ones who have difficulty surrendering to tender emotions or sadness. There are many tips in here on how to open up to the grieving process in a mindful way and move through it without sweeping it under the rug.

If you like a very linear and logical approach, most likely this book is not for you. However, if you are feeling scared, alone, confused and need to sort out complicated feelings, this may be just what you need.

Beautifully written. I am on my second reading to delve deeper into the depths of what can be gained from this book. Unattended Sorrow was my introduction to this author during a 5 day silent retreat. I found that most of the retreat for me centered on this topic. Basically, the who book is focused on sorrow, forgiveness and mercy when dealing with loss. All kind of loss i(physical death, loss of relationships, etc) are beautifully and helpfully addressed.

This is an amazing book. Besides wisdom and advice, this book actually is therapeutic just in the act of reading it. If you are going through a very tough time or loss in your life, read this book! Sometimes problems or situations cannot be fixed. Sometimes harsh blows are dealt quite unfairly and with no explanation or reason; we suffer a grave wound. This book is balm and wisdom to heal our wounds so that we can move on with greater resilience and deeper compassion for ourselves and others. Our strife can be the catalyst that facilitates growth in our coping skills and our overall understanding of life in general which of course leads to greater happiness and well being. Stephen Levine is brilliant and kind!

I am slowly working through this well-written book. Levine deals with all of the losses we experience in life, not just the death of a loved one. We all grieve and he shows us how we can learn to live through the grief and become healthier and happier.

This is not a book to read if you are looking for a concrete prescription for ending your grief and banishing the sorrow in your life. Rather, it informs the reader of the nature of grief and loss and begins the process of accepting who you really are without judgment. What I like the most is the fact that you can pick the book up and turn to any page and begin reading. Beautifully written, and just what I needed and will need for many days.

Great book from an amazing teacher, the world became slightly dimmer with his passing.
My mother had a very hard death and it took me nearly 1 1/2 years to come to peace with her death. It was Stephen Levine's "Unattended Sorrow" that brought me peace.

I thank Stephen Levine for such an insightful book. I buy this book for friends who have experienced loss. It is not necessarily a book for reading immediately following a loss, but definitely for me it was the right book at the right time after giving some space and time after the loss.
