Surviving Away from Home as Want to Read . Recommended to Kathleen by: Kathryn Prince. This book showed up on my desk at work in 1985.

Surviving Away from Home as Want to Read: Want to Read savin. ant to Read. It was in response to some stories I had told about some really bad cooking. Not a month goes by that I haven't refered to this cook book. This book is not yet featured on Listopia.

This book is now my gift of choice for high school graduations. It is comprehensive yet simple, practical yet interesting. I have been a homemaker for 25 years and still learned new things from this book. We now use several of the recipes regularly, especially the Orange Banana Sauce for pancakes and the Dump Cake. The hardback version with the vinyl cover and the pockets is well worth the extra cost in convenience, cleanliness, and longevity.

Surviving Away From Home, by Kathryn J. Frandsen, Kent P. Frandsen, Betty Rae Frandsen. Put only microwave-safe dishes in the microwave. That means no metal or tin. Glass or Corningware is the wisest choice. Cover your food with wax paper or a paper towel before you microwave it to avoid splattering. Use a pot holder when removing anything from the microwave. o Clean your dishes immediately after you finish eating. o Try to eat at your desk to avoid getting crumbs (BUGS) on the floor or in your bed.

Where's Mom Now That I Need Her: Surviving Away from Home, by Betty Rae Frandsen, Kathryn J. Frandsen Though I'm not fond of the title, for over 20 years I have been giving this book to kids going off to college, and I have been thanked for it over and over again. It has pages where it actually EXPLAINS stuff to you, as well as recipes. It has basic recipes, as well as a little more complex. Here is a site that tells you about the cookbook, and the page you first see tells you the different things included in the book (in addition to recipes.

My mother gave me one of these when I was going off to college. I found it incredibly useful with its cleaning tips and recipes. My college years were before the Internet went main stream and now all sorts of information is at everyone's fingertips. However, when I found out my young 2nd cousin was heading off to college I bought one of these for her. Maybe its nostalgia on my part, but I think a hard back copy of good tips can be useful to her.

This is the best gift to high school students going out on their own. There are simple 5 ingredient recipes, how to do laundry, how to put a button on and other simple sewing tasks, fix a tire, fix a bike and more. This has been my go to present for over 15 years. I appreciate the fact that it is still current and available.

Good book to send with your children as they fly the coop. I bought this when I left home and still use it to this day. Great reference book for shopping, food substitutions in cooking, has great recipies and good cleaning tips, etc... It's a must have for any young adult, and many adults as well.

I received this book as a gift when I moved out of my parents house. It was probably the best gift I ever received! Now I buy this same book for anyone I know that is moving out on their own for the first time.

Love, love, love this book! I received it when I moved into the dorms for the first time - many miles away from home. 30 plus years later, I still have this book with wonderful recipes my mom added to this book. I used it through college and beyond. It's one of those wonderful keepsakes that is certainly a "feel good" memento. I give this book to recent grads that are near and dear to my heart.

I picked this up at a used bookstore and love it, though I wish I had the ring-bound version instead. It's great for beginners and although I'm far from a beginner now, i still find myself consulting it because it's a quick easy reference for a recipe template that I can play around with later (for example, quiche, muffins, baked chicken, etc.). It's not as bulky as my beloved "Betty Crocker" but it still has a pretty decent variety of recipes.
I give it only 4 stars for three reasons. 1) The non-ring bound version doesn't hold up (or stay open) well. 2) There are no pictures or charts 3) Sometimes info is difficult to find on basic cooking times. Otherwise this is a great book and highly recommended.
Oh and as for the guy/gal reviewer who criticized it for being sexist, grow up. It's a catchy title, and the author is only playing to her audience. At least she is wise enough to realize that women DO need to deal with finances. (Years ago many women were left in the dark about such things-- my grandmother couldn't even write a check!). I applaud Ms. Frandsen for including a little bit of everything. Besides, you'll note that the presumed readers of the book are BOTH male and female-- we ALL need to know how to cook (and repair things) these days!

Sent this as a gift to a person away from home for the first time. It has easy recipes, cleaning tips, shopping tips, etc. Covers a lot of subjects that might be troublesome for someone away from home for the first time.

I've since sent it to two other people.
I like how this is written and I like that they spell out everything that you need to do when making a recipe. I also like that the recipes in this book aren't very fancy or elaborate. They are basic ingredients that you can use again and again for different recipes and are likely to have in your house. I don't know the first thing about cooking and I am very inexperienced around an open cook top, so this gave me some sensible advice to get started.
