I might be 62 and a 3 time grandma, but I didn't want my house to reveal these facts. There are times when you feel you must save something or display something and just pack it up for later in that overstuffed closet. My husband saves old batteries thinking they will be resurrected! Not me and not after reading this book. I had to do most of this purging when he was at work as he just thinks that jar of seeds will one day reach the garden and I know that they are long past their prime. Rita Emmett delves into our inner selves and reveals our private thoughts. Once I knew she knew, I started cleaning small areas and not just re-arrange but actually catorgorize and throw out. I even started to breathe easier with the relief of control over "things". I gave my children things that I had been asked to save for them and now it is on their conscience. I fight the urge to refill those newly cleaned areas with incoming objects but after 5 years of being clutter free, it isn't likely.

I was interested in this book because I liked her "Manage Your Time to Reduce Your Stress" but I found "Clutter Busting Handbook" less useful, although still worth reading. She does excel at pithy observations. One of my favorites was "we all have stuff that we love -- for a while -- and then one day, instead of looking wonderful, it looks like clutter." Another insight was that clutter is often just postponed decisions, and that the postponement isn't just procrastination; it can come from "decision fatigue" because we have so many options and stimuli coming at us. Giving myself permission to set some boundaries was useful in getting over the "loss aversion" that is programmed into us and capitalized on to the max by marketers.

I had read part of the book some years ago when visiting my children. .Was happy to find it in the same place now to get the name and author so I could order it from Amazon.

Rita Emmet has a very benign style. She doesn't make you feel guilty about the clutter. Her examples are numerous enough and cluttered up enough to make you feel part of life's gang. Her suggestions that the hardest part of all is just to begin to declutter, that any job can be broken up into smaller parts are helpful. But most important to me was the emphasis she places on every object having a "home" so that when you find it somewhere you know where to put it away so you can find it next time. This sounds so simple and intuitive, but somehow it really isn't. Maybe it is a concept that clutterers don't really accept . But following that guideline really does make decluttering possible.

After I read through the Clutter Busting Handbook I bought a copy for my best friend, who also loves it.

The information here could easily be contained in a couple page article rather than being spread over a whole book. There were a few suggestions I found helpful, but overall this was a listing of fairly basic organizational tips. For the price at $1.99, worth reading but I wouldn't pay much more.

Rita Emmett's book is right on the money! She has such good advise on clearing out out-of-date and out-of-fit clothing, little used furniture that is taking up valuable space, and the duplicate kitchen items that so many of us have in our kitchens. Her often humorous approach in telling us how to do it makes for interesting, enjoyable reading. It's a fine book and anyone with a clutter problem will gain much from reading and re-reading it.

I got a lot of good ideas to declutter my home before tearing it down and building a new one. Lot of great ideas! It was easy reading also and very informative. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in decluttering.

This book has some great ideas that are motivating and helpful for unloading clutter! It helps you overcome some of the ideas that keep you from getting rid of things you have held on to for so long.
Great Advice something I can do and use.
