In the last few decades life for children with Downs Syndrome has changed for the better. Where once they were marginalized. I am a genetic counselor and would never give this book to a family, but I noticed that some people who look at "Babies with Down Syndrome: A New Parents' Guide" bought this book instead, so I wanted to check it out. From the title, I wasn't expecting much as the correct name is "Down syndrome" rather than "Down's syndrome. Diagnoses are named to honor the people who first described them-but that doesn't mean that they own them!

It is named after the two British physicians, John Patterson Hughes and Peter George Ingle Stovin, who first described it in 1959. It is a rare variant of Behçet's disease, which entails more general problems with the circulatory system. Most patients are young adult males between the age of 20–40.

Also called sticky blood and Hughes Syndrome, APS makes one's blood clot too easily, creating high risk of stroke, thrombosis, and premature heart attack. It is also implicated in many other health problems including repeated miscarriages, neurological problems, eary dementia and migraines.

Hughes syndrome was a common problem among Arabs, Filipinos and possibly Whites in Kuwait. Its manifestations were severe, often requiring intensive-care management, and in one case it was fatal. Patients from the Indian subcontinent were conspicuous by their absence, despite the fact that they were well represented in all other rheumatic disease groups.
