I wish I could put into words the depth of my appreciation for your book. The insights and understanding you have and talk about make so much sense. And, Dr. Bown, you have validated, enhanced and provided a practical, usable plan for organizing the bits and pieces of thoughts that make life work better for me. Following your application methods, I have new vision and confidence as I continue on life's journey.

This Courageous Life quote comes from an incredible book about the life of Christ called "The Desire of Ages" by Ellen White: It is a less calamity to suffer whatever may befall than to depart in any manner from the will of God. "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of Go.

With this book in hand, you will be able to choose much more often to do and create what you most desire. This book hasn’t just helped me to take a step back and see where/how I would like to show up in my life more courageously, but it has helped me open up to (and really put into practice) the things I need to continue to do day in and day out to get there. 3 people found this helpful.

The Courageous Life stands out from other books of this genre by wrapping together the underlying science and theory behind pursuing a dream with practical methods, inspiration, and motivational stories that help readers stay focused on pursuing those dreams. The Courageous Life unites fundamental science with proven methods for reaching one's potential and dreams. The book discusses the topics surrounding the pursuit of a dream in detail and includes many examples and supporting stories to teach and encourage readers. The Courageous Life also helps readers write out a personalized plan, not only to help them clarify their dream, but to determine what specific steps they need -- today, this week, next month -- as they journey toward their dreams and goals. The author discusses in detail overcoming various barriers and fears in much more detail than other book of this genre. Finally, Brown covers at length the power behind readers self-talk, critical in maintaining the fortitude needed to pursue a dream, providing practical tools to maintain a healthy thought life.

The Courageous Life is an enjoyable, worthwhile read full of easy-to-understand concepts and tasks to bring out your inner dreams and defeat your inner demons. It's written in a somewhat simplistic way with lots of relatable stories and personal examples from the author. And when I say that it's written simplistically, I mean that as a total compliment. Many of these types of books seem to lose readers in the depth of their language, taking deep concepts and not presenting them in a way that connects to the average reader. Not everyone has the vocabulary of a linguist and the brian capability of a rocket scientist, and Dr. Brown seems to be aware of this, either naturally or coincidentally, as he writes in his personal man-to-man style here. But while the language is simple, the idea and meaning of the book are far from it. The Courageous Life is full of depth, thought, and it takes a real commitment to let it open up the things it wishes to inside of you. And THAT is the challenge of The Courageous Life. Reading the book is a piece of cake. But to get every ounce of possible worth out of it and be able to use it as the life tool it's intended to be, it takes a true willingness to extend yourself mentally and go places where probably you've consciously never gone before. It's not hard to get to those places, because Dr. Brown shows you the way. But there is no half-way. If you take the book as a casual read, then it's a book that will leave you with some ideas and a lot of positivity. But if you really commit to the book and commit to the blueprint that the author lays out for you to start you onward towards your dreams, then reading it can be a truly life-altering experience. It's all a matter of commitment. The answers to your life are all inside of you, and Dr. Brown hits all the right notes at the right times to push you to those answers. But there is no half-way. There is no "I'll browse this chapter, but when he asks me to reflect upon my values.. I won't really put much truth into it." If you read the book like that, then you're missing 90% of what the book has to offer. But if you take the time, commit, and embrace The Courageous Life, then I guarantee that you'll be a better person because of it. The Courageous Life might not be the "be-all, end-all" guide to every single aspect of living your life, but it definitely can be the start of it for you. If you're looking for some solid groundwork to your life's foundation and an open hand to point you in the right direction, then The Courageous Life is for you. Just be prepared to be as courageous in reading as you should be in living. If you have a dream, but lack direction, then The Courageous Life will send you on your way.
Excellent book. This helped clarify my goals at a time when we saw some major life changes.
The Courageous Life is a life that I've watched my brother consistently lead. Since he was a child the choices he has made in life were highly principled and based on his desire to be involved in living an effective mission-oriented life. Years ago, Ron began his huge project of studying the best academic and other resources that define how effective people discover and define passions/abilities/desires. During this time, he researched the best resources which instructed on how to pursue living these.

Ron's first academic pursuit was to earn a Masters in Electrical Engineering. And despite his other degrees and interests, I see him as an engineer when he approaches efforts like this book. He has written it with a typical concreteness of approach combined with passion. Then he mixes in to the work his dedication for the spiritual and altruistic that I think defines his life. After it all, he has created work with a welcome balance balance of the practical and inspirational --an enabling and functionally motivating manual to help you define and pursue your core callings/missions/goals.

Understanding that change needs to be had in attainable steps/successes, he writes the book almost as a workbook, allowing you to easily attain measurable milestones in first discerning and defining your core dreams/passions/missions. He then adding concretely researched steps to enable you to pursue these with clarity of purpose and method.

If you want to get a taste of Ron's writing style, he writes a weekly blog on leadership and the creative life over at a site named "Couragenet".

Bruce Brown,
biased brother, reader, fan
I began reading this book and couldn't put it down. I felt like Ron Brown wrote this book specifically directed toward me. I was able to relate and connect in a way I never had before compared to other "human potential" type books I've read over the years. I say that because of his authentic, humble style of writing where he reveals his own human frailities without that "I'm the expert, know-it-all delivery." Dr. Brown gives the reader a logical, systematic approach to achieving one's own dreams. The road map to your dreams begins with a lot of self introspection. There are several practical exercises to help clarify your dreams and aspirations and define the road map one must utilize to achieve those dreams. He's right...it does take courage to devote time and effort, but with Dr. Brown's encouragement and his explanation of the latest technology in human achievement and overcoming our fears(reinforced by quotes from the best of the best in the field), I couldn't help but get a journal and begin this journey to fulfill the dreams that have laid dormant in the back of my brain. I have a long way to go before I get to where I want to be, but I am inspired! I finally feel like I'm on the sailboat Dr. Brown refers to in his book, complete with rudder and the correct chart that will get me to my destination on the most efficient course. For anyone else out there who knows where they want to go, but doesn't quite know how to get there, I strongly encourage you to read this book. Thank you Dr. Brown!

Great book for helping you pinpoint your goals and how to go for them! It's a challenge, but it's a great way to get me moving in the right direction. I'd recommend this book to people who aren't sure of which direction to go next, or feel like they aren't meeting their goals, basically to everyone feeling "stuck." This book will help you get going places. And if you're already moving in this right direction, this book will give you the motivation you need to keep going for your goals. I loved it!
