In Suing for Peace, respected attorney James P. Kimmel, Jr. shows you why seeking justice never leads to peace or happiness and only makes our conflicts worse

In Suing for Peace, respected attorney James P. shows you why seeking justice never leads to peace or happiness and only makes our conflicts worse. Just as physicians have now discovered a connection between spirituality and medical outcomes, so Kimmel has now discovered a connection between spirituality and legal outcomes. That connection is this: The more we seek justice, the more bitter and spiritually impoverished we become. Winning an argument, a lawsuit, or a war at the expense of our emotional and spiritual well-being cannot be considered a victory by any measure.

From the time we are children we are taught that the best way-indeed the only way-to resolve conflicts and get what we need from life is to seek justice against those who wrong us. In fact, seeking justice has become an obsession in the United States. Unfortunately, this obsession has a dark side that is throwing our society-and our lives-dangerously out of balance.

Conflict abounds in the church of Jesus Christ. Making Peace is a 'why' book, not a 'how-to' book. Reconciliation within the body, however, will not happen with the right 'method' or 'set of principles. In Making Peace, readers are challenged to place their church and all of its dissension under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

From the time we are children we are taught that the best wayindeed the only wayto resolve conflicts and get what we need from life is to seek justice against those who wrong us. In fact, seeking justice has become an obsession in the United States. Unfortunately, this obsession has a dark side that is throwing our societyand our livesdangerously out of balance.

In the name of justice:We employ 700,000 lawyers-but only 36,000 clergyWe file 36 million lawsuits against each other every yearWe confine more than two million people in our prisonsWe have a justice system that costs us more than $650 billion annuallyWe have waged two wars that have killed thousands of people since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001

At this rate we should all be happy, right?

In Suing for Peace, respected attorney James P. Kimmel, Jr. shows you why seeking justice never leads to peace or happiness and only makes our conflicts worse. The secret to resolving life's conflicts is to stop seeking justice against your enemies and start suing for peace by practicing what Kimmel calls "nonjustice."

In this uncommon book of legal and spiritual wisdom, Kimmel shows you how to break the justice addiction that only fuels anger and suffering. His proven "Nonjustice System" guides you through nine practical steps you can take right now to resolve your conflicts and restore your happiness immediately.

Whether you have been injured emotionally, physically, or financially, Suing for Peace gives you everything you need to win the most important trials of your lifewithout lawyers, guns, or money.

I was led to this book after seeing Kimmel's appearance in the documentary film 365 Days: A Year in Happy Valley. In this film he suggested that everyone who felt injured by the events surrounding the Sandusky scandal consider forgiveness instead of revenge. (He did not name names, but he was referring to a much wider circle of people beyond the children abused by Sandusky.) As someone who has lived in Happy Valley most of my life, I found this message provocative and I wanted to find out more about Kimmel's thinking. Consequently, I bought and read the book.

What I discovered is that Kimmel presents his ideas about forgiveness by explaining how his life history led up to them. He writes about injustices he experienced as a child and his need to get even. He describes his entry into the legal system as a search for a way of making things right. Eventually, he became intensely aware of a fundamental problem when people seek justice, which is that those who feel injured and seek recompense from those they believe have offended them are never satisfied with "winning" for long. And as the satisfaction of the person who wins the case fades, the dissatisfaction of the person who loses the case grows and festers, creating a desire for revenge. Kimmel describes how this problem drove him to an intense spiritual search for an answer to the problem. Eventually, he finds an answer: forgiveness and what he calls "non-justice."

Personally, I love reading people's memoirs of their search for meaning in a world full of suffering, so I became engrossed in Kimmel's story. I had a hard time putting the book down, and almost read it in one sitting. I was also intrigued by his arguments for reforming the justice system into what he calls a non-justice system. Even though I think he goes a bit overboard in suggesting that the desire for justice underlies *every* human problem, I can see how the relentless search for justice *does* underlie a good deal of human suffering. I won't give away the details of his non-justice solution; but if you have already been led to consider this book, I think that you will also be intrigued by Kimmel's story of his discovery of non-justice..

This book is part personal history, part hard data, part philosophical idealism, all wrapped around the theme of forgiveness. It talks about how futile and destructive it can be to seek revenge, and offers practical, sensible alternatives to that. Long story short, I took this book to heart, and among other things, it helped me let go of some old grudges. I think if more people practiced the forgiveness and compassion described in this book, the world would be a kinder, safer place.

I wish to thank Mr. James Kimmel for his contribution to change in our legal system with his spiritual journey of forgiveness. It was a pleasure to read this book, especially, seeing how our journey's were so similar reading the same spiritual books. I shall cherish this book for years to come and will continue to pass it on to people that would benefit by this in their own lives and also, to lawyers that I continue to meet in my own advocacy in the brain injury industry.

I will be forever grateful to his counsel over a year ago in the situation that I had found myself in as I believe this has been my gift of transformation in forgiveness and also, holding parties accountable with a loving heart!

May his visions be utilized in the ongoing transformation of our justice system for now and future generations!

A one of a kind work that can heal your way of thinking on what justice is. Spare yourself of all that one has to go through in a legal system by reevaluating what is most important to you for your own peace of mind.

Great book. Everyone should read this to realize that living a forgiving life is the key to happiness.

This is not a How to book which the title may imply.

It is however a book of extreme importance. It is a 'guide' in the sense of showing the damage the pursuit of justice incurs.

The book is unique in using facts to show how justice in things like crime, war, your personal life, etc. are actually costing you more than you think.

It changed my life and my heart and I would like to thank the author for this contribution to the great writings I have read.

I have read many how to books and this was more important than all of them combined.

You have freed me from an addiction I never knew I had and you gave me a great measure of peace through this journal of your struggle to find yours.

So I would hope you consider this book a success.
