The problem of the transport of matter, momentum and energy in a plasma submitted to temperature, pressure and velocity gradients combined with external electric and magnetic fields is, without any doubt, one of the most crucial aspects of plasma physics. In a nutshell, it can be said that the object of transport theory is the response of a system (here: a plasma) to a sustained external constraint. Let us make this statement more explicit.

The aim of & Processes in Plasmas'' is to provide a comprehensive and unified presentation of the transport theory in plasmas. This subject is of great importance in general statistical and plasma physics; moreover, it constitutes a keystone in the thermonuclear fusion programme as well as in astro- and geophysics. The subject is presented here by unified concepts, methods and notations. The contents are strongly embedded in a general framework of theoretical physics, appealing to modern Hamiltonian mechanics, kinetic theory, non-equilibrium thermodynamics, etc.

Classical transport theory is strictly valid for a plasma in a homogeneous and stationary magnetic field. In the '60 experiments have shown that this theory does not apply as a local theory of transport in Tokamaks. Three regimes of collisionality are characteristic of the neoclassical transport theory: the banana regime (the electronic diffusion coefficient increases starting from zero), the plateau regime (the diffusion coefficient is almost independent of the collisionality) and the Pfirsch-Schluter regime (the electronic diffusion coefficient again increases with the collisionality).
