Schoolhouse, Nottingham Square. Incorporated in 1722 by Lieutenant Governor John Wentworth, Nottingham was named for Daniel Finch, 2nd Earl of Nottingham. The earl was a close friend of Samuel Shute and Joseph Dudley, previous colonial governors of New Hampshire. Among the grantees was Peregrine White, descendant of Peregrine White of the Mayflower, the first child of English parentage born in New England. At one time, the town had 17 watermills in operation

The city of Nottingham has seen significant changes to its buildings and streets over the centuries—some improving, and others less so. From the first ever Boots chemist shop to the tram systems of two different centuries and the civic award-winning Short Stairs, the past continues to influence the present, and local historian Douglas Whitworth's selection of 95 new images, archive and modern, show just what has changed, and what has stayed the same. Nottingham Then & Now is a fascinating look at Nottingham over the decades, and will appeal to all those who are interested in the city, past and present.
