CHEMISTRY & CHEMICAL REACTIVITY, 7e, combines thorough instruction with powerful multimedia tools to give you a deeper understanding of general chemistry concepts. The book has a long-standing reputation for logical organization; macro to micro orientation; a superior art program; and state-of-the art media, which is expanded in the new edition. The text clearly emphasizes the visual nature of chemistry and illustrates the close interrelationship of the macroscopic, symbolic, and particulate levels of chemistry. With clear writing, seamless technology integration, and robust homework/assessment tools, CHEMISTRY & CHEMICAL REACTIVITY, 7e, equips you with tools to empower the mastery, assignment, and assessment of chemical principles. The text's art program reveals these three levels in engaging detail--and is fully integrated with new key media components. The Web-based tutorial CengageNOW™ generates a personalized study plan to meet your specific needs and includes Go Chemistry mini video lectures and flash cards that offer the perfect quick review for students on the go. Fully customizable OWL is a Web-based homework system that maximizes study time and offers an optional e-book. With hundreds of guided simulations, animations, video clips, and more, CHEMISTRY & CHEMICAL REACTIVITY, 7e, is more completely integrated with accompanying technology than any other text on the market.

For the sake of full disclosure, I'll admit I find the whole college textbook industry to be a scam that prays off of people seeking knowledge.
I digress.

This Cengage/OWL/Access code/eBook thing is especially a scam. If your instructor is planning on using the online learning bit for assignments and such then the student is forced to buy new. I bought used for 97 dollars, saved a few bucks (initially) but now I find out the access code is invalid. It had been used previously, but it said the book came with one. Now I can either:
a)buy the access code for 97 more dollars.
b) return the book and buy new
c) just buy the eBook/access code (which happens in options "a" and "b", also)

To buy the access code for this book, one must also buy the eBook, which is why it is $97. In all three cases the student is getting the shaft. In case "b" the good Amazon seller doesn't make money, either. In all three cases the publisher gets ahead. They already made money off the book I tried to buy, but that wasn't enough, I suppose.

They effectively ruined the used book market. Students, as well as the used book sellers, get the raw end of the deal.

If your instructor does NOT plan on using the online access, then everything is cool.

I was extremely wary of purchasing this item due to the unpleasant reviews of not coming with an access code for OWL, which I need for my class. I ordered the item in New condition from the "Amazon" seller, including tax I paid around $157. Thanks to my Amazon Prime trial I paid no shipping costs. The item arrived superbly packaged within 40 hours of placing the order. I was apprehensive upon opening it at first, because the plastic wrap covering the textbook was noticeably torn enough for me to open the front cover and see if the access code had been scratched off already or not, which it was not. I then tried the code and voila - it worked flawlessly, no issues. The textbook is in beautiful condition. As for the actual content within the textbook, I'll have to wait and see how helpful it is for my class. Nonetheless, the Amazon seller provided me with exactly what I was looking for in good time.
Granted, Chemistry is difficult. This book however, fails to make it any easier. On the one hand, the chapters are confusingly written, on the other, the book occasionally spends many pages explaining how to do convoluted halfway calculations that are supposed to make it easier to do the problems. They confused me even more until I figured out they were not necessary.

One other thing really annoyed me. On almost every page of the book, the authors encourage you to buy their online-support package, saying tempting things like "Sign in for a simulation and exercise exploring this topic". I was getting so confused by the book that I bought the package for 150 dollars, on top of the original book price.

The online component is worthless. It is mostly a condensed version of the text from the book with some cheaply constructed video animations mirroring the pictures in the book. I feel pretty ripped off. 19.99 would have been ok, but 150 is way too high.

I can't help but wonder if the book was made confusing on purpose to drive you to buy the additional online piece.
I bought the book used thinking i was saving a lot, until i found my instructor requires to have an OWL code which costs around $100. I had an OWL code from my primary institution unused, but owl codes are for the specified book only. Bottom line clarify if you need OWL or not. If so save yourself money and buy new. The only thing that saved me a bit is applying and getting approved for the Amazon Visa Rewards card, which gave me a $50 Amazon gift card.
This book was written by college professors which explains why there were so many errors.
There weren't enough explanations and examples. The definitions are terrible.
This book was a waste of my money!!!
Writing of textbooks should be left to those authors who are independent of your college and actually do so for a living.
Definitely needed proof reading before printing.
This book was no help to me and my classmates.
The OWL code that came with this book did not work. Amazon was unable to help me fix it and offered to let me return it for credit, but could not send me another because the product was under review (as I understand it, others had had the same problem). So, before returning the book I decided to try contacting the company from which the OWL code came. Their customer service people were very good and solved the problem for me. So everything is OK with the book now and I kept it.
Make sure you buy this book NEW! If you want the 24-month access code for Owl you have to purchase the book new. Without doing so, you'll end up having to pay about $130 (current prices) for the online Owl itself.
Good and thorough textbook for general chemistry. I was able to get the latest edition at an awesome price from another student who finished the course so I may be biased. But the book is great and I have learned a lot form it. Solid problems as well. Odd problem solutions are found in the back which make this an even better buy.
