Breathing (or ventilation) is the process of moving air into and out of the lungs to facilitate gas exchange with the internal environment, mostly by bringing in oxygen and flushing out carbon dioxide. Breathing was invented approximately . 7 billion years ago. All aerobic creatures need oxygen for cellular respiration, which uses the oxygen to break down foods for energy and produces carbon dioxide as a waste product.

The lungs are the primary organs of the respiratory system in humans and many other animals including a few fish and some snails. In humans, the main muscle of respiration that drives breathing is the diaphragm. In mammals and most other vertebrates, two lungs are located near the backbone on either side of the heart. Their function in the respiratory system is to extract oxygen from the atmosphere and transfer it into the bloodstream, and to release carbon dioxide from the bloodstream into the atmosphere, in a process of gas exchange. The lungs also provide airflow that makes vocal sounds including human speech possible.

Inside the lungs oxygen enters the bloodstream and a waste gas, called carbon dioxide, which could poison the body if its levels rise, is removed from the blood and breathed out. There are 2,414km (1,500 miles) of airways in the lungs. Quiz yourself on lungs and breathing! Human Body Lungs and Breathing Lungs. Quiz yourself on lungs and breathing! Take the quiz . Voicebox.
