By the time John Clarke signed on to pilot the Mayflower on its journey to America, he had already managed a remarkably adventurous career. Born in 1575 in England, Clarke was an old hand at sailing to America by the time the Mayflower set out. He first came to this country in 1609, transporting goods and colonists to the Virginia colony of Jamestown. A storm came up quickly and threatened the small boat, with Clarke serving as captain. One which has stood the test of time, is: The First Baptist Church in America, by James R. Graves; and Dr. Samuel Adlam, who served as Pastor from 1849 until 1864. This book was first published in 1887; but is still in print. It isn't as detailed as it could be; but is a good basic introduction to the topic at hand. Well I will close by telling you that I have greatly enjoyed the study I've been able to make of Dr. Clarke and his true legacies for the past 60 years plus; and I hope and pray that you will as well.
