A naturalist ramble through the heavily lumbered land of the Willapa Hills of western Washington State. Pyle has two things in mind here. The layout of the book is poetic in itself-set in four sections that symbolically represent summer, fall, winter, and spring, each section in turn contains four essays-revealing a cohesion of the author's spirit with the seasons. The first is to sing the praises of the region to which he emigrated for the peace, serenity, and views which it afforded. But Washington State means forestry, and Pyle depicts the ravages of the intensive lumbering upon the land and its life.

Weaving vivid portraits of the place and its inhabitants-animal, plant, and human-with the story of his own love affair with the hills, Robert Michael Pyle has written a book so even-handed in its passion that it has been celebrated by those who make their living with a chain saw as well as by environmentalists. Smart, funny, respectful, informed book. Pyle has great intimacy and affection for the place he lives. The lessons of observation and his unflinching willingness to look at everything there is without editing out the unpleasant aspects of resource use and abuse is heartening.

Wintergreen: Rambles in a Ravaged Land offers one of the most personal and sincere accounts regarding one man's relationship--and all Man's potential--with Nature.

This is a natural history of the heavily cut-over forest of western Washington. The author writes well of forestry, butterflies and other ecological matters, but less well of more general subjects. The dense verbiage of some passages brings to mind walking through a six-year old clear cut. Adjectives and adverbs propagate like shrubs and saplings, making for slow going, and prose style swings between 19th century effusive and 20th century cute. The author doesn't need to try so hard to show the value of an abused and neglected region: it speaks for itself.
