Peterson's original handbook covered birds of Eastern North America, and has since been followed by guides to Western birds, animal tracks, butterflies, and many other natural wonders. He and his team updated "The Birders' Bible" as new species were discovered and classifications modified.

Roger Tory Peterson, one of America's pre-eminent artist-naturalists and arguably the inventor of the field guide, made people love birds like no one since John James Audubon. A Field Guide to the Birds, first published in 1934, remains his most famous and wonderful work. The manual stood instantly apart from the dichotomous keys zoologists used to identify species, since Peterson grouped paintings of related species together and used arrows to, as he explained, "pinpoint the key field marks

The Peterson Field Guides (PFG) are a popular and influential series of American field guides intended to assist the layman in identification of birds, plants, insects and other natural phenomena. His inaugural volume was the classic 1934 book A Field Guide to the Birds, published (as were all subsequent volumes) by the Houghton Mifflin Company.

The field guide includes all of the birds of eastern and central North America. I have other field guides that stay on the shelf whenever I go birdwatching. This guide from Roger Tory Peterson isn't one of those. This is the best field guide on the market. This includes accidentals, exotics, and escapes. The field guide also includes roadside and flight silhouettes. These silhouettes really do help in the identification of many species of birds. The book also has a systematic checklist that you can use to mark off the birds that you've seen. Range maps are included, too. All the vital information needed to identify birds in the field is here.

All the birds of eastern and central North America-including accidentals, exotics, and escapes-shown in full color and described in detail. 390 complete, easy-to-read range maps showing summer and winter ranges, breeding grounds, and other special range information. My father was an avid birdwatcher and even went on bird counts in the dead of winter. As a teen, I thought he was crazy standing out in the bitter cold in the mountains of PA "counting birds". If the "DUH!" expression had existed back in the 60's, I would have used it frequently!
When he passed, I kept many of his books and the Peterson Field Guide to Eastern Birds was one of them. As I got older, I found myself picking it up to see if I could identify a bird that I had seen for the first time. I used it a lot for that purpose. To make a long story short, I lost the book (by loaning it to someone..big mistake!)& had seen the most beautiful snow white bird out front & didn't know what it was! Went to Amazon.com & ordered one & less than a week later it came. I love nature & now am a lot more aware of the beauty of birds. And upon looking them up, I continue to learn something new about them..GREAT BOOK!!

Resident of the Southeast Michigan region, and I LOVE this book. I use it constantly. It was my first guide that wasn't labeled explicitly "for beginners" (as I was finding those to cover too few species in too much detail) and it's remained my personal go-to book as I've developed as a birder.

It's definitely easily-readable enough for anyone who is a beginner, and is rich enough in detail and extensive enough in the number of species it covers that you probably won't need to upgrade for a good while.

We purchased this book years ago and refer it often. It is very easy to find information. We especially like that birds are grouped together and there are easy to understand pictures and comments about each one. We wanted another one and have looked in local stores, but could not find it. Glad we looked in Amazon.

I have one of these books in each of my cars. It is great for identifying birds you spot. For me it is easier to use than other books of the same kind.

This book was recommended to me by a bird expert because it is so user friendly. I'm very happy to be able to identify some of the birds around my feeder.

Excellent birder's guide. Clean and neat used copy. Easy to use and refer to without hassles. Best there is, in my opinion.

I had an earlier edition of the Peterson guide that I loved but it was stolen. To choose a replacement I looked at all the different guides and their reviews on various birding websites, and Peterson's guide fit my needs the best again. I carry it in my daypack around town and on the trail and refer to it often. I am very pleased.
Peterson guides are consistently good
