House Lurcher: Care, Rearing and Training at Home. House Lurcher - Jackie Drakeford. The purpose of the lurcher was to put meat upon the table, in the days when meat was hunted as much as reared. In the old days, it was difficult to overwinter domestic livestock, and most were killed at the end of autumn and preserved by pickling and salting, as well as consumed with glee at the great feasts that were held at this time. Only the best of breeding stock was kept back.

A fun book for those of us who have - in our case, unwittingly - adopted a 'lurcher' dog. Surprisingly few people know what this 'breed' is - including the people at the shelter, the local vet, etc. It's been an amusing voyage of discovery. They are not like any other dog I have owned.

Surprisingly good for a narrow interest book like this. My only complaint is that the photos are pretty poor quality, author please consider updating in any future editions.

We were amused to discover that we had also nick-named our Lurcher "Einstein."

I recently rescued a dog via Petfinders here in California - she had been taken from an over-crowded pen full of dogs living outdoors in the Sierra foothills. I had been looking for a Scottish Deerhound as a rescue without luck - and her photo caught my eye. I had never heard of a Lurcher - while common in the U.K. and Ireland they are not a registered dog breed and though they are identified as a group of dogs with growing popularity in the UK and Ireland - here in the U.S. they would just be big mutts. They are a kind of U.K. version of Labradoodles - but with a long history. In trying to decipher her personality and needs - I did quite a lot of research on the internet - and after getting my dog found this fab book on Lurchers. The newspaper article about the rescue of my dog - and 51 others stated that the "owner" started out with two dogs of his own and took in two from friends - none neutered - within two years time he had 51 dogs! The first four were an Irish Wolfhound, Border Collie, Aussie Sheepdog and an Airedale. The man was breeding Lurchers and didn't even know it (could have used a little more information in general too).
Anyway - this book got to the heart of the matter and allowed me to trace my "Mutt's" ancestry and better understand who she is and what she needs to be a happy dog. If you are looking at adopting a mixed breed sighthound this is a great book that gets into the specifics of each of the individual sight hound breeds, the dogs they are commonly mixed with and what you can expect. If you are getting a puppy it will give you an idea of what they may look like and their size when fully grown. The training information, exercise, diet information and more are all very informative.

This book is very informative and well written. I highly recommend it for lurcher lovers. I thought I knew everything about lurchers, but after reading this book I discovered that I was wrong. The photos were excellent too.

I've been working with greyhounds for 25 years and I learned a few things from this book. Very informative with some good advice on treating ailments and injuries and the general content is well written and informative. I wouldn't agree with everything, but everyone forms their own opinions through experience. Very good book especially if you're interested in getting a lurcher or any of the sighthound breeds.
