The novels were published from 1994 to 1997, and featured the First through Sixth Doctors. The Seventh Doctor also appeared in one novel). The Missing Adventures complemented the Virgin New Adventures range, which had proved successful.

The Missing Adventures series of novels by Virgin Books was launched in 1994 following the success of its New Adventures line. Much as the NA series featured Seventh Doctor adventures with more detail and mature content than previously seen on TV and in the Target Books novelisations, the MA series focused on the first six Doctors. There were occasional multi-Doctor stories and crossovers with the NA line.

Time of Your Life was the eighth book in the Virgin Missing Adventures series. Written by Steve Lyons, it featured the Sixth Doctor and introduced the short-lived companion Grant Markham. However, much like Jamie McCrimmon in The Highlanders, Grant is largely a background character until the Doctor offers to take him on "one trip" in the TARDIS at the end of the novel. This proved to be no hyperbole; Markham did get only one more official trip, 1996's Killing Ground.

Steve Lyon's 'Time of your Life' is an interesting and at some points entertaining read. I think this book gets off to a bad start with the cover art.. it leaves the reader little to get excited about: The 6th Doctor uncharacteristically wielding an axe and wearing some blue overalls (either not really convincing for the year 2191!) and of course a giant dinosaur roaming Neo Tokyo which makes you more worried than excited given Who's history of giant dinosaurs. I have to give credit where credit is due and this does feel authentic, like it could easily fit into a 1985/86 era Doctor Who story.. complete with its strengths such as great believable and interesting characters but also its short falls of being very violent, at times stupid (Godzilla fighting giant robots) and a rather weak plot which is reduced basically into a disaster story of everyone trying to survive which becomes a bit monotonous after a while. All in all Time of Your Life is not an amazing Missing Adventure nor is it terrible, I actually found this much more entertaining than the previous Missing Adventure that I read, Justin Richards' 'Sands of Time' and that gets much higher reviews.. so take from that what you will.

Do not expect a Doctor Who story when you pick up this book, because you won't get it. The Doctor is featured so little in the novel that I wondered how it was published in the series. This is a book about a television station and a planetary system that is enthralled to it. There are many different characters featured, running the station, acting, wanting to move up in the world, etc., and you might see the Doctor one page out of every 20. Save your money unless you insist upon having a complete collection of Doctor Who: Missing Adventures. There are better ones out there, folks.
