"It's the end of the world, and I have the best seat in the house."            From the very first line, "Luna" grabs the reader.  Where most books start with a world in trouble and ride the story on into a happy ending or to the ultimate destruction, "Luna" starts with the end of the world.  Things can only get better... right?            With the world destroyed, the story centers on six survivors in the first lunar shuttle,on their way to shake down and tune up a robot-built underground tunnel complex on the Moon.  They have to face a number of issues, not the least of which is the self-destruction of their homeworld and the survival of the species.            Fortunately, any culture advanced enough to have a lunar colony and the capability to destroy its own civilization is likely to have people who are not on the planet at any given time.  From these few survivors, the human race will have to either survive and grow, or wither away into nothing.            They must face many difficulties, ranging from purely scientific ones such as genetics, mechanics, chemistry, and nutrition, to the more complex difficulties of human nature, such as love, sex, and loneliness. The conflict between politics and military command also rears its ugly head, with uncertain results, aside from the obvious:            War.            Told from the point of view of Max, the space janitor, "Luna" takes us on a fast-paced tour of our own Moon, the LaGrange points, a number of habitable satellites, as well as the light and dark places in the human soul.             Originally produced as a serial, Whited's "Luna" assembles every episode into one volume!  More than a little reminiscent of Robert Heinlein, mixed with a dash of E.E. "Doc" Smith, and stirred with a sardonic sense of humor uniquely his own, "Luna" makes an excellent read for any fan of space!

POFOD
It started like a hard sci fi, I quite enjoyed that part - with all the little details and explanations. Unfortunately after the dust settles the book turns into a wet male fantasy about how all the women want to be with the main character, and all the men want to be him. He goes around getting kisses from pining females ready to physically fight and kill for his attention (I kid you not), jokes supposedly funny (not really) jokes causing everyone's admiration at his awesome sense of humour (few people literally say at one point or another that without his sense of humour their little remainder of humanity would not have survived), and scaring other males into calling him "sir" while at the same time being friendly with them (~"I'm such a nice guy, you will get along with me, but don't forget to call me "sir" because I can kick you out in space if I don't like you"). Ooh. It's a very awkward read, and it's a real shame because the sci fi part of it is good, but this wet male fantasy part is disturbing. In anime they have a special genre for it, it's called "harem". So, here goes: it's a harem sci fi. If it's your cup of tea, you might enjoy it.

I have to say, this book was a blast from start to end. It reminded me of classic, old school SciFi, like Robert Heinlein, and I don't say that lightly. Lot of challenges for the heroes to overcome, some set backs along the way, but good old-fashioned ingenuity saves the day. I'm being a bit facetious, but in many ways it also reminded me of The Martian, and I mean that as praise too. The stakes are much higher, but somehow the author makes all the challenges and solutions believable. I hope there is a sequel!

Great book! After reading "Nightlord: Sunset", I was eager to read another of this author's works. This certainly didn't disappoint! Unique setting, great characters, and excellent dialog. Highly recommended.

A down-to-earth (no pun intended) version of an apocalypse: well-drawn characters put in extraordinarily challenging positions and coping using mostly commonsense and a fair bit of heroism. The 'winners' are those who react with a Number 8-wire mentality. No, that's not going to make sense outside New Zealand. People who can adapt both themselves and the materials available to make the best of changing circumstances. The career politicians and professionals do not do so well. An excellent read, well-written and well-plotted. Give me more.

Garon Whited did it again. Loved the storyline told from max's point of view. It was easy to imagine the circumstances in the plot from the words used. Yeah for the Luna crew. I was on the cheering team as they fought for survival in what turned into the future development of humankind.
I can not say any more. Only by reading this book can you find one positive outcome in the face of the destruction of earth.

Gripping from the very first sentence, this book is a magnificently written journey through the various stages of human survival. The joy, the pain, the will and ability to persevere after a catastrophic tragedy, with keen insight into the human soul. The characters are excellent creations with whom you shall find yourself falling in love as you share their experiences. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys words flowing beautifully through the mind, transporting one's self to another place, another time, another life... or more simply, anyone who enjoys a really well written story. I eagerly anticipate more work to come from this author!!!

Reminds me of "The Martian" but with more people and no rescue from earth. Cool story with fascinating characters and weird but intriguing ideas.
I read this book the way a starving man eats a hamburger! The realism in the writing is such that it becomes more and more difficult to remember that it's not a report on actual happenings. The author knows how to make his characters live.
