Russians are great talkers and the novel floats on a sea of wonderfully varied, expressive and tremendous speech. The characters reveal themselves in their words, spoken or merely thought. For in a good novel thought is a form of speech when presented dramatically, as it is here. Fiction Historical Fiction in Translation. To read this book, upload an EPUB or FB2 file to Bookmate.

In the summer of 1952, in a highly-publicized series of incidents that occurred in the skies over Washington DC, alien aircraft returned to Earth to retrieve the bodies of those who had fallen in Roswell New Mexico. As the US government knows, these astronauts were from Mars... Actual audio transcript - dated July 19, 1952 - Washington DC - Midnight: WASHINGTON NATIONAL AIRPORT: "Andrews Tower, do you read? Did you have an airplane in sight west-northwest or east of your airport moving east-bound?" ANDREWS AIRFORCE BASE: "No, but we just got a call from the Center. We're looking for it." WASHINGTON: "We've got a big target showing up on our scope. He's just coming in on the west edge of your airport - the northwest edge of it eastbound. He'll be passing right through the northern portion of your field on an east heading. He's about a quarter of a mile from the northwest runway - right over the edge of your northwest runway now." ANDREWS: "What happened to your target now?" WASHINGTON: "He's still eastbound. He went directly over Andrews Fields and is now five miles east." ANDREWS: "Where did he come from?" WASHINGTON: "We picked him up ourselves at about seven miles east, slightly southeast, and we have been tracking him ever since then. The Center has been tracking him farther than that." ANDREWS: "Was he waving his course?" WASHINGTON: "Holding steady course, due east heading." ANDREWS: "This is Andrews. Our radar tracking says he's got a big fat target out here northeast of Andrews. He says he's got two more south of the field." WASHINGTON: "Yes, well the Center has about four or five around the Andrews Range station. The Center is working a National Airlines - the Center is working him and vectoring him around his target. He went around Andrews. He saw one of them - looks like [Garbled]. Went by him...or something. He said he's got one about three miles off his right wing right now. There are so many targets around here it is hard to tell as they are not moving very fast..."Mars. This is a really original and very entertaining story that delivers on its blurb: "Mars. Earth. Reality. Get ready to collide this year."

We have two parallel worlds, Mars and Earth, very subtly woven into each other, so subtly that the reader wonders if and how they will ever collide. There's a suspense element there, a real page turner, which will have the reader speculating when and where is the collision going to happen. Suspense is carried far enough into the book to have the reader biting their nails trying to guess how that will happen.

While we navigate those two parallel realities, we have some very likeable aliens and some rather stupid earthlings -all right, not all are stupid, but really, there's a message there. And the message is, precisely, about human stupidity. I'm not to deliver a big spoiler here, so suffice it to say us humans turn out to look like a band of criminals. Which we are, in the grand scheme of things. So this book will make you think, besides entertaining you to boot.

It's quite credible, too, a well achieved balance between science and fiction. It doesn't matter if you believe there may be little green men out there or not, the story makes perfect sense, se non è vero è ben trovato, as they say. What made best sense of all to me is the bottom line, Earth is in trouble!

Just what I was looking for in Science Fiction-not Sci-Fi. Excellent story and I agree with another person who said 'Not your
usual shoot 'em up.' I liked the focus on the Martians as real people an not some incomprehensible life form.
I really wanted the story to continue.

I love stories about MARS and this is my new favorite. I love the social media twist and it's implications. Also I love the Martian discussions about humans.

Had much fun with this book, it's very entertaining! It has several stories between Earth and Mars which kept me really guessing what's next, and it's very dynamic which for me it's an important thing or else I'm put to sleep.

Pretty original, too. Instead of being the old and much repeated epic of good earthlings against the universe, which is the same as a Western but with space characters, this one puts earthlings more in the other side of the fence, not as the saviors of themselves and the universe but as real invasive creatures who can't be trusted even to save themselves.

The little Martians are great characters, much like your next door neighbor kids' except it's the next planet kids. Pity there aren't photos of them in this illustrated edition!

By the way, this illustrated edition would make for a very nice present to any sci fi and adventure lover.

Definitely a different perspective on inter-planetary relations. Instead of the usual shoot-em-up between Earthlings and Martians, this inventive novel shows that empathy exists on both sides. With parallel stories on both Earth and Mars, there is interest and tension in both worlds. The reference to actual known science about Mars is informative and doesn't slow the action down. The Martians, apart from the rough conditions they endure, seem almost "human" -- is that a good thing? The humans seem, well, human -- love, bureaucracy, public relation concerns, etc. A very different take on science fiction -- or is it just really good fiction!
