Brian Stableford is one of the best science fiction authors living, for a very particular reason. There are writers who put together a better written page, but none who can compete with Stableford in his exploration of ideas.
Brian Stableford is one of the best science fiction authors living, for a very particular reason. Science fiction at its best is taking an idea and exploring its implications and ramifications, and Stableford has always been a master of this. Even his early work in the 1970s - which I loved as a child - may have had space opera trappings, but was always about ideas. In the Daedelus series, they were primarily about questions about biology and society, in the Hooded Swan series to my memory it was largely about psychology.
How do you feel? he said, as she got out of the car. Better, she assured him. Much more relaxed than I did this time yesterday vet’s giant hypodermic. That’s a truly repulsive analogy. I’m sorry about going on at you so much-it was just more bloat, more hot air. I’m okay now. I’ll see you back in Cockayne. I always do, she assured him. For hundreds of years the male members of the Kilcannon family have considered themselves to be the beneficiaries of distortions in the statistical distribution of chance, associating their most fortunate windfalls with visual distortions that they call streaks. This belief has led to the accumulation of a vast heritage of superstitions-rules which, if broken, might allegedly terminate the privilege.
In Streaking, Brian Stableford has written a characteristically brilliant intellectual thriller, full of rich incident and compelling argument-his finest work since his seminal vampire novel, The Empire of Fear.

She’s like us, Dad, Canny said, slowly. She’s a streaker-or so she says. He had expected a reflexive cry of That’s impossible! but none materialized.
She’s like us, Dad, Canny said, slowly. Lord Credesdale had certainly been taken aback by the utterly unexpected news, but the old man took it aboard more thoughtfully than Canny could have imagined. How did she know what you are? his father asked, eventually. She says that she suspected before, but that she didn’t know for sure until she saw the world come apart when I hit that zero-deconstructing the moment, she called it.
