The warden liked to keep in touch with them, and in answer to her phone call told her to come along and he and his wife would shelter her until she could find lodgings ds. Shelter’ was what she needed, and the grimy building in a north London square was the only place she could call home. St Agnes’ had been endowed by a rich philanthropist to be an orphanage for destitute girls. It had originally been two large houses, and was still divided into two sections, one for the under-fives, the other for the school age girls.

Froniga is "The White Witch" of the title. As with every book I have read by Elizabeth Goudge, I treasured every minute I was reading it. She writes poetry in prose

Froniga is "The White Witch" of the title. This is a beautifully written, gently unfolding novel of good versus evil, spirituality, and the immeasurable toll of a Civil War that divided families and communities. The prose, as others have noted already is lyrical and emotive. She writes poetry in prose. The characters were charming and the history fasinating.

From the back cover:
His hatred was as strong as her love. Laurel wanted to keep her nephew, Peter, after the death of her sister and her sister's husband, Pedro de las Aguilas. For Peter's sake, however, she felt compelled to take him to his father's family in Spain. The family's hostility over Pedro's marriage was understandable. Unexpected was the bitter enmity that the arrogant Luis de las Aguilas directed at Laurel personally. It is as inevitable that their passions would flare out of control.

I enjoyed this book even though the storyline is a little worn out. The main characters have great chemistry and dialogue. The support characters add depth to the story.its definitely a keeper for me.
