Malodred
This book has really earned 3 1/2 stars. The overall situation is a Regency "comedy of manners": therefore, the plot is quite predictable. However, the witty dialogue and the narrator's pointed observations on the characters and their motivations prevent this novel from becoming an entire jar of Marshmallow Fluff.

Since I am a great fan of Regency romances, I bought quite a few of M.C. Beaton's. While I enjoyed this one, and expect to enjoy the others, my criticism of this one is the same as the one I finished this morning: underdeveloped characters, typical plot, and the plot was made up of jumping around from one short, incomplete scenario to another.

That said, I still enjoyed it, and will enjoy the others I bought. It is nice occasionally to read something that doesn't demand much attention, that one can pick up and put down in short spurts without worrying that one will lose track when one picks it up again. Very light reading demanding little brain activity.

This book seems to be less serious than her usual fare, although all of them are amusing to some extent.

In addition to the cast of characters, we have a troublesome mynah bird to stir the pot. There are several murder attempts by, most fortunately, a truly incompetent villain, although he does succeed in killing several unintended victims.

I enjoy reading any and all of Ms. Chesney's books. Since I know what to expect, they are never disappointing.

A beautiful young lady was in love with a man who was disliked by her parents. They paid off the man to go away which he accepted. The Duke falls for the young lady and marries her but didn't know about her feelings for the other man. The Duke was unhappy. And so the story goes...there's jealousy, murder plots, misunderstandings and forgiveness in the story. Clean romance.
Browelali
In spite of her youth, beauty, and innocence, our heroine is superficial and shallow. Her parents are superficial and shallow. This is soap opera stuff. I like Marion Chesney/M C Beaton, but I'll stick to Hamish MacBeth and Agatha Raisin.

The first in the Dukes and Desires series, and very enjoyable as are all of the romances by M. C. Beaton.

A good read event though the plot was similar to her other series. Will definitely keep going in the series.
This book was so great. I never read this author writings before but was glad I have. Only 9 chapters but each is long and filled with trials, success, and laughing. Got the second one, " Her Grace's Passion".
