This is, hands down, one of the worst romance novels I have ever read. There were no redeeming qualities. I'll lay out the worst of the worst- fair warning there will be spoilers:

A. Ultra-mega-martyr heroine. When the man she has always loved comes back in her life, he thinks the heroine betrayed him with her rapist and abuser and he punishes her for it. Not only does he punish her for it, she goes around constantly proclaiming how terrible she feels for betraying him. With a rapist who beat her. Let that sink in. Not content to inflict that atrocious storyline on us, the writer made it even worse by making the woman suffer no real effects of all that rape and abuse- nothing that affects her behavior anyway. If the author wanted to write a book about a heroine recovering from spousal abuse, she could have at least tried to make the characterization consistent with women who've actually been through it. Instead we get a heroine who seems to be suffering almost no mental repercussion from damn near a decade of abuse. Stupid.

B. Dumbass hero. Seeing him constantly kick the heroine in the metaphorical gut for the whole first half of the book, when we the reader know that she didn't do anything to deserve it, does nothing to endear him to us. How am I supposed to believe that any reasonably intelligent human being in love with someone else could COMPLETELY miss signs that this woman had been traumatized and victimized for seven years? Idiot.

C. The dialogue. Absolutely no one talks this way. The WORST offender is the seven year old kid. Half the time he sounds like a four year old, and half the time he sounds like he's in his 60's. Ridiculous.

D. Multiple POV's. This just does not work in a romance novel. Not only do we hear the hero and heroine's thoughts, we get thoughts from their friends, families and neighbors as well. Ridiculously aggravating.

E. The cast. It wasn't bad enough that we get everyone's thoughts, the majority of the people who we hear from are ABSOLUTELY AWFUL PEOPLE WITH NO REDEEMING VALUE WHATSOEVER. Awful.

Please don't buy this book. Don't contribute to sales of such a horrific thing. Buy another, better, romance novel. Pick one, any one. It will be better. I promise. This book was so bad that I am now forced to reconsider books that I have previously rated at the one or two star level. This has set a new low bar, and in light of having read this, I think I have to at least give others the benefit of the doubt. Their writing isn't good, but at least it's not this.

while not her best work. this is a very entertaining book. she can do it all. it is a shame she has no more books coming out. I have been a faithful fan for years.

Reading Harlequin books is like eating popcorn. No real substance but just the thing for a good escape.
Way to go Margaret Way!
