I really enjoyed this introduction to Patricia Rice as a romance author. I have often seen plenty of her books in the library or book rental shop, so I know her books are well liked but I never got around to trying any until Blue Clouds was offered for free on Kindle. I was almost immediately captivated by the well written story, with one of the most enjoyable heroines I have met in a long time.

I've read many Patricia Rice romances, and based on her first contemporaries, she's even better at contemporary than historical. Like Susan Elizabeth Phillips, she combines humor and emotion into a fast moving, thoroughly enjoyable read. Can't wait for the next one!

Here the beloved author of Garden of Dreams presents another delightfully fresh novel destined to enchant the heart and have readers believing once again in the healing power of love. BLUE CLOUDS bursts with Patricia Rice's trademark wit and romance--along with a devilish hero and a determined woman who dares to unlock his self-imposed prison . . . and throw away the key.Around the small California town where Pippa Cochran has fled to escape an abusive boyfriend, Seth Wyatt is called the Grim Reaper--and not just because he's a bestselling author of horror novels. He's an imposing presence, battling more inner demons than even an indefatigable woman like Pippa cares to handle. Yet, while in his employ, she can't resist the emotional pull of his damaged son or the chance to hide in the fortress he calls a home. Then Pippa's amazing gifts begin to alter their world in ways none of them could have imagined. But something soon goes wrong. Dangerous "accidents" occur, threatening to destroy the tremulous new love that Pippa and Seth have dared to discover. . . .

Dear author, attention to details is crucial, specifically when you choose a city of 170 k people as your setting, but you write about it like it's a tiny village with population of about 1000 people. Furthermore, Garden Grove is flat, meaning no hills, valleys, and certainly no cliffs. Aside from poor attention to details, writing itself is choppy, doesn't flow, and it feels like it was a project for a creative writing class. If you insist on writing, please, please, please, get a decent editor.

Patricia Rice is a new author for me. After reading this book, I will definitely buy the next in this series. I thought the characters were very well developed and enjoyed the growth in the interpersonal relationships, including the romance. I appreciated the restraint the author exercised in writing the "bedroom scenes" so they were not pornographic. The mystery was interesting enough to keep me turning the pages to see how it played out but most of all the story was heartwarming and I enjoyed all of the characters, except the villains, of course.

The story sounded intriguing and had a flair of Beauty and the Beast to it, but I was sorely disappointed. Lust was the main theme until they finally declared their love for each other at the end of the book (after a few sex scenes that I skipped over). The mystery of the attempted murders draaaaaagged on forever, making me lose interest and forgetting it was even happening. Billy's part in it was so small! I thought for sure he'd have more of an appearance, because Pippa had trust issues and was scarred for life, but it wasn't addressed much. And the times he did show up, he was a wimp! There was no epic battle between them or a search and rescue to save her from the big, bad Billy. Nope. Just a quick, lame confrontation and then it was over. Not impressed. The only good thing I enjoyed was Pippa's and Chad's relationship. She was so sweet to him, even when he was a spoiled brat at the beginning, and then their friendship blossomed to a mother son relationship. Loved it! Only reason this book got 2 stars.

Pippa is 30 years old, a registered nurse and experienced hospital administrator. When we first meet her in the book, she has just broken up with her cop boyfriend who abused her physically. Her head and heart is very clear that she will not allow such abuse and dominance in her life - good on Pippa - and she does what is necessary to take care of herself. Her exchanges with the H are a joy to read, they were so funny! The Beast was being taught a lesson about life and living, and Pippa does it with huge doses of humor. The only thing I did not like was how their relationship devolved into intimacy fairly abruptly, almost out of the blue, which took my head out of the story a bit. Otherwise, highly recommended for those who enjoy strong heroines and stubborn heroes who find their way to their HEA in the end.

I immensely enjoyed so many aspects of this story. The wonderful characters were developed on deeper levels chapter by chapter. The mystery of attempted murder threaded through the budding romance. It also included a sensitive portrayal of a six year old wheelchair bound boy, and other flawed supporting cast in a small town setting. The book was hard to put down as I kept applauding the strength and growth of maturity all the way to the satisfying end.

This story has the full deal, excellent characters, interesting plot, a few twists and lots of romance. Pippa is on the run from an abusive ex and Seth is hiding from a hurtful past. The two of them together make the perfect couple, if they can get past their fears and trust each other. Seth's son, Chad, provides the delightful icing on the cake. This story was especially fun, but in my opinion, because once Pippa realized what she and Seth really need, she doesn't back off until she gets everything she dreams. There were plenty of times along the way that I felt like reaching through the pages and shaking her, but in the end her way was worth it.

Just finished this book last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Kept me turning pages from the beginning. Great mix of humor and serious plot. Not to given anything away but I did get annoyed that Seth (a grown man) kept telling people they were fired but doing nothing. That was stupid. And the end of the book got a bit sappy predictable. All in a all a great read to keep you entertained. Def. recommend
I fell in love with Patricia ' s character's in this book. she gave each one such great descriptions, I was able to see them as if they were in living color. As the story built the mystery and the two main characters started bantering back and forth it was difficult to figure out how the story could have a happy ending for all involved . It was a wonderful mystery and a love story too!
