Read Polly, by Freya North online on Bookmate – NEW on ebook for the first time with NEW author afterword. Polly Fenton is about to embark on a year-long teachers’ exchange to America. He’s out of sight, she’s out of her mind. Swapping cottage pie for corn dogs is one thing, but trading lives with her American counterpart, Jen, is quite another. The minute Polly’s feet touch down Stateside, she’s swept off them altogether. When she meets Chip Jonson, the school athletic trainer, all thoughts of home suddenly disappear.

Polly Fenton, well aware of this, was determined that it would not be so with her. Fortuitously, the mundanity, the back-to-work and down-to-earthness which met her, were a far cry from the stylized. emotional reunions she’d conjured and half-anticipated, direct from a lot at Universal Studios. In reality, she seemed to settle back into her routine much more easily than she had in London. This in itself was affirming. And then there was the snow.

Freya North 3-Book Collection: Secrets, Chances, Rumours.

This is America, thought Polly, venturing nearer to the platform and absorbing all surrounding her as she went, not just the pine and the fact that folk build houses for their friends in a day. No; alongside the pies and pumpernickel, the accents and the stunning scenery, this enormous sense of spirit embodies America, surely. I am a big Freya North fan but I'm afraid this effort was appalling. The heroine is TSTL and even worse: she is just immature, self-centered and irritating. The hero is equally annoying though he is more bland. It isn't long before one just doesn't care at all what happens to them. Worse, the whole story is a real slog to get through: there are endless details and descriptions ( of the school, to mention but one example) which serve no purpose other than to run up the page count; there are details about "bit players" that are equally useless and which get in the way. This story needs a good editor and a serious re-write. I hate to be so brutal about any work of Ms. North's but this one is just plain bad.
This was a fun book. I bought it at the Gatwick Airport book store on my way back to the US and managed to finish it on the long plane ride home. It's romance, comedy, heartbreak, all in one. The characters were fun and interesting. The descriptions of the people and places were inviting. I've read it over a couple of times, b/c there's just something charming about it.
