Untraceable is the book in Laura Griffin's romantic suspense series The Tracers which is set in Austin, Texas. The Tracers: An elite cadre of forensic investigators who use trace-often to solve crimes. As this was my first book by Laura Griffin, I may try her again hoping that she will build a more believable and lovable heroine and to see if her next plot proves better shaped. In Untranceable, it was a pity that Griffin was unable to make it up to its potential.

Her gaze fixed on a scarred leather jacket flung across a chair, and she remembered Nathan. She sat up in bed and immediately felt dizzy e pain pills. She glanced at the bandage on her left arm and pictured the baby-faced resident who’d stitched her up and brought her the little brown bottle. She glanced around and tried to orient herself. She faintly remembered waking up at dawn, and the room had been blanketed in bluish light, rain thrumming just outside the windows

ALEX LOVELL MAKES PEOPLE DISAPPEAR. TURNS OUT, SHE'S NOT THE ONLY ONE. Private investigator Alexandra Lovell uses computer skills and cunning to help clients drop off the radar and begin new lives in safety. Melanie Bess, desperate to escape her abusive cop husband, was one of those clients. But when Melanie vanishes for real, Alex fears the worst, and sets out to discover what happened. Using every resource she can get her hands on -- including an elite team of forensic scientists known as the Tracers, and a jaded, sexy Austin PD detective -- Alex embarks on a mission to uncover the truth. As far as homicide cop Nathan Deveraux is concerned, no body means no case. But as much as he wants to believe that Alex's hunch about Melanie's murder is wrong, his instincts -- and their visceral attraction -- won't let him walk away. As a grim picture of what really happened begins to emerge, Nathan realizes this investigation runs deeper than they could ever have guessed. And each step nearer the truth puts Alex in danger of being the next to disappear....

I enjoy the storyline, but I don't like that she made the main character, who is supposed to be a highly trained FBI agent, so hapless and unprepared. Every time she gets into trouble there's a male character there to save her, and then she's upset that she needed to be saved and tells herself she'll be prepared next time but then AGAIN she goes out unprepared and needs saving. Like going to Mexico without learning the language. Going to a hot, muggy location where you know you'll either be on a boat or walking a muddy dirt trail but not wearing the proper attire. Getting drunk in the middle of an investigation and having a hangover so bad that all of your peers notice you're "green" but you refuse to hydrate or eat something to counteract the affects of the alcohol. For someone who supposedly went through college and FBI training she's pretty dumb.

UNTRACEABLE was an unpredictable romantic suspense about Alex, a computer genius and P.I. who helps women "vanish" from abusive or otherwise dangerous situations. Unable to locate a client and suspecting foul play she asks for help from Nathan, an Austin detective who works with said clients husband... This was the fourth book I've read by Ms. Griffin and like the others the writing was fast paced and intelligent. Although this is the book one in the "Tracers" series, Nathan made his first appearance in "Thread of Fear" and he and Alex first met in "Whisper of Warning" so I'd recommend reading those before starting this one.

Alex is a loner and independent to her core while Nathan is a divorcee dedicated to the job. Both were likable though I could have done without Nathan and the ex-wife drama while he was trying to get Alex into bed. The attraction and connection between these two was evident, but I would have liked a little more "something" in the romance department. The mystery had me constantly guessing and kept me in total suspense. There were quite a few twists and turns that I didn't see coming either. Overall it was a thrilling read that was entertaining and never boring. I'm looking forward to Troy's story and would easily recommend this book.

First I should start off by saying, I have read every Tracers book - I am in love with the series, so much so, that I’ve decided to read them again! I love LG’s writing style and story telling. Untraceable is classic romantic suspense, with a fun, engaging cast of characters. Love the mix of romance, murder and forensics. I’m giving this particular book 4.5 stars because I had more than a few cringing moments with the heroine and her decisions (no spoiler so I’ll just say: walk away, Alex! Walk away, sheesh!). Having said that, each book in the series gets better and better. ***Highly recommend.

The Tracers Series:

Untraceable

Unspeakable (Coming Summer 2010)

Griffin can really sweep you into the scene of a crime and investigation. Her love scenes are mild in language, but passionate in content. Her characters are realistic and interesting personalities. Her mysteries unfold with clues and evidence that make sense... no loose ends or unbelievable circumstances. The romance builds as the story grows. This is total package story telling.

I've read all of Griffin's romantic suspense novels and have been very entertained by all of them. Some, including "Thread of Fear" and "Whisper of Warning" were thoroughly fantastic. Some others have been terrific, but a bit shy of those first two titles. I found "Untraceable" to be one of Griffin's best for crime suspense. I also LOVED the hero character, Nathan. I believe my one disappointment was the fact that the heroine held herself back from the romantic connection with no good reason. Alexandra (Alex) had feelings for Nathan, saw that he was a very good man, knew he felt the same for her, but turned cold on him without provocation. Why? I never really connected with her purpose. The thing that saved the romance for me was the fact that Nathan didn't wimp out and take her coldness. He kept his pride and dignity, while waiting for her to fix her own insecurities.

The story:
Alex runs her own private investigation firm. She helps people discover if their spouses are cheating, helps insurance agencies nab clients who are making fraudulent claims, and occasionally helps women hide from threatening husbands. One of her clients has gone missing. Alex is afraid the client's husband found and killed her. In an effort to solve the mystery, Alex turns to Austin police detective, Nathan Devereaux. Together, she hopes they will find the answers.

Nathan wants Alex to back out of the investigation. As clues unfold, the situation becomes more and more dangerous. When Alex refuses to give in, Nathan makes it his personal priority to solve the case before she is harmed. As he gets to know her better, he also makes it his mission to win her heart.

This book is the first in a series. I'm looking forward to the next installment. If you'd like more great romantic suspense in the mean time, try some of Griffin's earlier titles:
Thread of Fear
Whisper of Warning
One Last Breath

A couple of my personal favorites in the romantic suspense genera:
Unlawful Contact (I-Team Series, Book 3)
Pursuit (Warning: A couple of graphically violent scenes)
Landamath
I'm not saying I didn't enjoy the book but I found it a little too predictable. The premise of the story was well intentioned but I think it fell flat and could have been more "mysterious". I lose interest in books that are more about the hard-to-get girl and the horny guy trying to get them then about the "guts" of the mystery....excuse me while I yawn. I probably won't continue on with the series.

A very exciting start to what seems like will be a very good series. Apparently the two main characters had a brief "history" in a previous book "Whisper of Warning", which I didn't even realize I had read at first. However, given that I read the book several years ago, I didn't remember them at all. This did not detract from the book in any way, though a few times in the beginning I did feel like I was perhaps missing something about their relationship (such that it was). This feeling went away as the book progressed so I don't think it's at all necessary to read that book first (though the main characters in that previous book do make an appearance or two in this one). The characters in this book are likeable and the story was fast-paced and interesting. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
