The Catholic Encyclopedia defines religious quietism as:

…the doctrine which declares that man's highest perfection consists in a sort of psychical self-annihilation and a consequent absorption of the soul into the Divine Essence even during the present life. In the state of "quietude" the mind is wholly inactive; it no longer thinks or wills on its own account, but remains passive while God acts within it.

For the Catholic Church, this doctrine, which was banned, is a grave error or sin. It leads to “erroneous notions which, if consistently followed, would prove fatal to morality. It is fostered by Pantheism and similar theories, and it involves peculiar notions concerning the Divine cooperation in human acts.”

Yet it is difficult to see any of this dangerous material in “A Short Method of Prayer” by Jeanne Marie Bouvier de la Motte Guyon (1648-1717). Rather than being about “anything goes” and the abandonment of either religious or conventional morality, this book, and the quietism it expresses, is mild and inviting. By laying down your will, or parts of it, we invite the Divine into our formerly restless minds.

Of course, if you are running a church, want to fill pews, and fill up the collection basket, this kind of religious stance could be dangerous. But for the rest of us, quietism is a perfect way to enter into a relationship with the divine unhindered by organized structures, either spiritual or religious.

Well, this is not a book to be taken lightly or view as a quick read. In fact, I have not, as of yet, finished it even though it is only about 95 pages. You must, with all deference to the reader of this review, read each sentence several times and with careful thought. For two reasons. The first is that it is a direct translation from the French (noun articles and genders) and of the time in which it was written. The second is that it is packed with spirituality. I am now working on thought control and have realized the importance that it plays in a Christian's life. When I am satisfied with my standing in this area, I will move on and perhaps write another review of the rest of the book. It is, at any rate, profound and should be considered part of a Christian's bibliography.

There is more to prayer than you can learn over a lunch break, we all understand as much. So how does Mme. Guyon lead us into her own life of prayer? Begin with a moment of silence, and then look inside yourself. Saints all wrote about that, Teresa of Avila called it her interior castle, the Apostle Paul his inner man. This is where we can encounter the cosmic order, find our place in that order, & receive guidance for how to live on this planet.

I would definitely recommend this book to every Christian who wants to learn the fastest way to progress through prayer to union with God; no one explains it in simpler terms than Madam Guyon.

Very well written and a lot of information about Prayers. Very interesting and knowledgeable writing. Back up with scriptures to aid us. I only had one minor problem some of the words were something I didn't know. I did learn a lot and would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more on the method of prayers.

If you can grasp the concept that Mme. Guyon is expounding here, it will take you to wherever it is you are destined to go in the Spirit realm. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME ON THE WATERED DOWN REWRITE - "A Short and Easy Method of Prayer - Enhanced Version". It is so diluted as to be nearly worthless and contains at least one statement that Mme. Guyon not only would not make, but teaches against. I won't even give my copy away to someone else, but will throw it away. As for this version, the 'Authentic Original Classic', it has to be read like the Bible, a little at a time. It is wonderfully profitable.

This is not a review of content, but of format. This ebook has tiny print (the introduction fools you because it's normal) and all the text is centered on the page, making it very awkward to read.
Obviously the author understood a deeper prayer that what she writes about. In this little book she is simply trying to make the reader aware of different aspects of prayer and only "hints" at the depth that is possible. She has some very interesting thoughts on suffering which readers can really get some great insight on yet another aspect of prayer. This is a great book for anyone who wants to understand more about prayer, but it is not intended to actually go into the practice of prayer or even much more than touching on what might be possible in prayer. Yet no matter how advanced we might think we are in prayer this book has something to offer us.

She also talks about self abandonment and there is a good book on this by Fr. J. P. deCaussade, SJ entitled "Self-Abandonment to Divine Providence" and goes into much depth. The book with his letters is the best one. And she touches on Prayer of Heart also. A book that goes into details on this prayer is by George A. Maloney entitled "Prayer of the Heart."

Use this book as a starting spot but don't stop with it.
