Letter to A Christian Nation is his reply. Forty-four percent of the American population is convinced that Jesus will return to judge the living and the dead sometime in the next fifty years. Using rational argument, Harris offers a measured refutation of the beliefs that form the core of fundamentalist Christianity. According to the most common interpretation of biblical prophecy, Jesus will return only after things have gone horribly awry here on earth.

Letter to a Christian Nation is a book by Sam Harris, written in response to feedback he received following the publication of his first book The End of Faith. The book is written in the form of an open letter to a Christian in the United States. Harris states that his aim is "to demolish the intellectual and moral pretensions of Christianity in its most committed forms. The book was released in September 2006. In October it entered the New York Times Best Seller list at number seven.

The book is written in the form of an open letter to a Christian. Harris addresses his arguments to members of the conservative Christian Right in America. In answer to their appeal to the Bible on all questions of morality, he points to the harsh moral code of the Old Testament (death for adultery, homosexuality, disobedience to parents et., and contrasts this with, for example, the complete non-violence of Jainism.

Robinson's diminutive work is a response to Sam Harris's book, Letter to a Christian Nation. Rather than a discourse of freethinking and questioning ideas, the reader is treated to constant and redundant Christian platitudes interspersed with biblical quotations. The entire essence of the book could easily be gleaned from any Sunday morning televangelist. Robinson's book is more a diatribe and personal attack on Harris, and other non-believers, than an analysis of metaphysical, ethical, and moral issues. According to Robinson, the "Christian" God is the one and only God, and without Christianity, a person has no reason to live, and no direction their life. Ethics and morals are impossible. Typical of Robinson's redundant text are such unfounded generalizations such as, "If the triune God does not exist, then knowledge is impossible. Only the Christian worldview supplies the foundation necessary for love, logic, science, moral standards, and mathematics". Robinson continues with assertions such as, "Christ lays the foundation so that rational mankind can trust and utilize mathematics and physics." (p.28). How about, "Only Christian theism provides the necessary preconditions for laws of reason and morality." (p.44). Even Carl Sagan was not immune from Robinson's judgment: "As a limited human being [Sagan] did not possess all knowledge, and his claim ["The cosmos is all there is or ever will be"] was a waste of ink and paper" (p.68). Somehow I think the subject of this critique falls into that category. One of the final remarks (p.74), "Deny the infinite and all-knowing God of Christianity and one cannot know anything at all" was really the entire book in one sentence. I do know one thing, having read the scholarly and definitive work by Sam Harris (Letter to a Christian Nation), I purchased Robinson's book out of interest and curiosity. As a note to potential buyers of Robinson's book: Don't waste your money.

I was thoroughly disappointed with this book. I felt like each paragraph consisted of one sentence rephrased four or five different ways and each page was just a rearrangement of the previous page. I would not recommend this book for atheists or Christians alike.

The author writes a logical, sound basis that disproves atheism and agnosticism; Demonstrates that God must exist; Rationally defeats Harris sentence by sentence; contends that reason and fixed morality require theism; and confounds the New Atheists and the Brights.

This book refutes Sam Harris (A Letter to a Christian Nation)and defeats all the New Atheists, such as Richard Dawkins (The God Delusion), Daniel Dennett, and the Brights, at their starting point.
