The Secret of “The Secret “; Unlocking the Mysteries of the Runaway Bestseller, by Karen Kelly. Intrigued by the title, I thought, ah, a book about how to write a bestseller. I had a manuscript, gathering dust in my desk drawer, that I finished five, six years earlier. I thought maybe this book would give me the insight and perhaps courage to dig it out, polish it up and try to get it published. In my rush to checkout, I didn’t even look inside the front cover. I just picked it up and put it in my cart, which is not something I usually do.

A fact filled, myth busting look at the basis and basics of the book and DVD - including many of the inspirations, history and source material for the famous bestseller. Taking a positive, but factual view of The Secret, the listener (I had the audiobook) will be able to make a good evaluation of the lessons taught, and maybe more importantly, where to draw the line between brilliant marketing, and "Secrets" of self help theories. Not a riveting work, but a high quality one.

I thought this might be interesting, and while I am a student of the Abraham materials, I am all for a reasonable discussion about these topics. I thought this book might be one. It kind of started off as one. When it got to the "Science" and "Physics" part it really started to devolve into a bashing, with charged, biased language that I doubt Kelly even knew she was using, falling as she did, on the other side of the fence of this discussion. (Sometimes in Psychology they call that "Idntification with the Aggressor" LOL!)

I was sorry to see the unbiased explorer taking sides, not just in WHO she cited, but in her own words. So it goes. I also do not appreciate, and this is not exactly Kelly's fault, that anything RELATED to Law of Attraction (The Secret is only one version of this VERY old idea, and many would argue not a very good one) or New Thought then gets dragged into the negative vortex of "Can you believe those silly asses think you can just hope for a Hummer and it drives up to your house?? How Stupid are they?!?~" kind of thing.

And as you already know, and I know the haters hate this, but what you say about this stuff has zero impact on those that believe this stuff has merit. And it is NOT an Either Or (though some LOA people will argue it is, and that is OK too). Most of us GET that being Optimistic (See Martin Seligman and the U of Pennsylvania EXPLOSION in Positive Psychology) and upbeat, and positive, and seeing the half full glass and so on tends to attract more positive experiences, and we know that horribly negative people seem to draw, duhh, more negativity. This is not a "Law" perhaps, but we all get that that is significantly true. Birds of a Feather. Like attracts like. You know what I mean. Anyway, Kelly magnetized success, so good for her, much as Byrne did as well, and I bet the two of them used some positive thinking to get the books done and published. Sorry that the world buys more of "Let's throw the one on the pedestal into the mud puddle" but in this culture, that is how it is. To quote Dr. Phil: "How's that working for you?" See you in the Vortex. Aho.

I was looking for more information on how to apply the Law of Attraction... I ordered, took a 9 hr trip and started listening to it. It reads more like an investigative reporter... I think I trust most of what was said and I certainly have come to respect Jerry & Esther Hicks more. I'm not sure it is really for the person who has just been exposed to the Secret. Once someone has experienced some incredible results I think they are then ready to listen to someone pick the Secret and Law of Attraction apart. Interesting read.

I was interested in the subject specifically... The Secret. Also in the history of best-selling self help books in America. Karen Kelly does a good job on both and I learned a lot. If you are intrigued by the subjects... you will find the book a good read. I learned a lot. Also I got some suggestions for books I'd like to read.

Info was not what I expected it to be and totally dis-information. Sorry I bought it and would not recommend it to anyone I know.

In a world of junk science, hype and advocacy/journalism, Karen Kelly's book is a delightful exploration of the phenomena of the multi-media shooting star, The Secret.

I give The Secret full credit for being a brilliantly marketed concept. I also believe that something that gets the masses thinking about their own development serves a useful purpose. But, I felt that the DVD, especially, did not strike the right balance between "manifesting" and swinging into action. And, I felt that some of the claims frequently over-reached in the interest of making a product/message that was attractive to the masses.

With that bias before reading this book, I was an easy mark for the author's very analytical and well researched inquiry into many of the claims of The Secret. What impressed me most was that Ms. Kelly did so without resorting to a muckraking style. Her writing is very balanced and seemingly very, very well researched.

Beyond learning the apparent truth about matters involving The Secret, I thoroughly enjoyed the author's explanation of some of the roots of the self-help movement and her analysis of the more recent claims with regard to quantum physics.

Now, if only a fraction of those who have viewed or read "The Secret" would read this book, Ms. Kelly would have raised the intelligence and consciousness of many. Regretfully, I don't see that as likely happening. In the instant gratification world in which we live, this book doesn't provide any hope of magic pills. As such, the road to best seller will be challenging. Ms. Kelly, I - for one - will be rooting for you and your book. This is one very fine effort.
